MySpace Trawl - Kid Carpet
Then buzz it up

With all the horrible goings on in Big Brother where lots of nasty horrible words have been exchanged by lots of nasty nobodies, this week’s MySpace Trawl will showcase some nice happy fun bouncy music that might actually make you think there is some happiness in the world. Possibly.
One note of caution, though; some of the songs on today's Trawl have a few naughty words thrown in, so please be commence with caution. Phew, that’s the warning given, so now nobody can sue us or accuse of poisoning young children’s minds or put us on the front of newspapers even though there are a billion worse things going on in the world. What a bloody culture. Anyway, that’s another topic. Let's all boogie down to Kid Carpet.
By our reckoning, we think we’ve already mentioned Kid Carpet a few times on our glorious interweb site. We’ve already told you about his gig exploits and talked about him somewhere else. But we’ve forgotten. No matter. There’s no time like the present. Kid Carpet is one man who is quite unique in his musical craft. Instead of using all your conventional instruments like most bands do, he uses a tool that’s much more conventional and fun. Children’s toys!
Remember when you were a youngster and you innocently hammered away on your mini-guitar that your parents probably spent coppers on from your local Boots? Well, like most people you sadly grew up and left the guitar in a dusty cupboard and never played with it again. The genius of Kid Carpet is that he’s actually made music out of these instruments. Don’t ask us how, - we’re to dumb to work it out - but with some sticky tape and probably some clever wiring, these toys have been altered to make music that actually sounds better then a lot of wanky indie music.
Even better still comes the live part of the Kid Carpet experience, where you can see him physically playing them too. It's an amazing sight to see a grown man clutch one of those My First ABC educational toys and make funny samples out of them. But it's not just about cleverly rigging toys noises together, the Kid also does his own excellent reworks of some certified classics. Van Halen’s pretty much only decent song Jump was given a nice reworking with some skittering game soundtrack samples underneath, but then all of his music will make you feel happy and bouncy.
There doesn’t seem to be any particular meaning to any of Kid Carpet's songs, unless we’re too thick to notice, but songs like There’s A Shoe is a moderately fast-paced tale of a shoe, by the road. It could be a real-life tale of something that happened. We just don’t know. You should ask him, though, as conveniently Kid Carpet is going on a mini tour. And wouldn’t you know it, he’s playing this very evening.
If you’re lucky enough to live in Bristol or can get to the fine city, do yourselves a favour and go see him do his thing. With a new album due out this year, it should be a treat of old favourites and new songs! He plays at a bizarrely named place called Joe Public tonight. But don’t worry if you can’t go tonight, there are more chances to go next month:
3rd, Cargo, London
19th, Barfly, Liverpool
20th, Adelphi, Hull
21st, Classic Grand, Glasgow
22nd, Fibbers, York
23rd, Star & Garter, Manchester
P.S If you want to know Kid Carpet’s real name, try mixing the letters around. Hint hint.
