Fyreon Newcastle Clunys MySpaceIt's Christmas; usually a time for fresh-faced youngsters to knock on your door and sing carols while you stand around either lap up the festive cheers, worry how much they’ll beg from you or - like us - tell them to piss off and bother someone else.

Music is generally crap this time of year too, with horrible Christmas singles out – which of course we’ve been telling you all about - and it's time for Noddy Holder to reap in the benefits of his one decent song when it gets belted out on pretty much every TV music channel, radio station or adverts for Asda. Instead of bringing you some calm, soothing festive music with an annoying children’s choir in it, we’ve decided to rock out with this week’s band – Fyreon.

Who are anything but calming, soothing and thankfully don’t feature any children.

When we were busy looking for acts to feature for our last trawl of 2006, we were just about ready to give up and do an easy summary of what we’ve found this year. But at the last minute we were pointed in the direction of Fyreon. However, the thought of a band that call themselves 'alternative' and 'grunge' was a little off-putting to us. The thought of grunge makes us think of soppy kids who’ve never laughed at a joke before and spend most of their time poncing around complaining about how shite their lives are. Alternative sometimes blends into metal. Now that is a scary thought, as when we think of metal we associate it with oldish, fat, sweaty men who have lost all meaning in their lives and spend most of their time riding bikes decked out in tight-fitting leather or denim at the same time as listening to bands who are exactly the same. Not a nice image is it? Go on, think a little harder. Not pleasant at all is it?

Anyway, now you’ve finished scaring yourselves mentally, we're happy to tell you that not all metal bands are like this. Fresh new waves of metal bands are starting to emerge which are thankfully banishing the traditional image we’ve just reminded you off. Fyreon are just one of the bands breaking this trend. Hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne - which has offered us acts such as Maximo Park and The Futureheads - Fyreon are ushering in a new harder sound from the region. Although Fyreon are unsigned they’ve made an impact in their native region, playing at various venues across the region and even being crowned winners of The Clunys battle of the band competition this year. Not bad, eh? But why is this?

Well Fyreon have got a good strong sound going for themselves, with all four members playing a crucial role in the strength of their sound. We’re also impressed at the quality production of the music too. A lot of unsigned bands will fail badly by rushing the recording, trying to put too many effects over it and generally try to step into shoes that are to big for them. Fyreon have a very smooth sound with lots of twists and turns, not just the same basic structure that many successful bands fall in to. All the various parts of the songs are clear – guitar, bass, drums and vocal. Nothing is muffled or sounds out of place.

Crucially to this style of music, it’s the vocals that catch you and draw you in. Lead singer Debi shouts and snarls the words as the drums crash noisily around the swirling guitars and crisp bass. The songs available to listen to are from their current EP which were recorded at various points throughout the year. Amazingly you can buy physical copies of the record too – just in time for Christmas too, we may add.

While they're only around shops in Newcastle, we’re sure the band will be more then happy to send you something so you can open something other than a bill or junk mail.
