MySpace Trawl – Four Tet

MySpace Trawl Four TetOver the god knows how long we’ve been shoving decent music in your direction guiding you away from Girls Aloud and all that other crap you secretly like, we’ve come to realise that we keep on mentioning a certain artist.

Actually that’s a lie, and we seem to mention him an awful lot. But only because we admire the skills this man has. It's kind of non-complicated, but for the more stupid, Four Tet doesn’t just record under one name. Instead he has worked with two other musical legends in the band Fridge who are soon to make a comeback and, more recently, he has been collaborating with the drumming master Steve Reid. So why are we so giddy with excitement like school children about one person?

Not only has Kieran Hebden had a long and established music career, he also is one of the founders of creating the 'Folktronica' movement. Now we know what you're thinking – not more bloody random genres that makes no sense at all and are generally shit. But not this time – Folktronica is a genre that doesn’t involve armies of children waving glowsticks around at you like morons. Instead, it is a cool and calming style of music that is accessible to all who want to listen.

Folk music is traditionally thought of a in a not-so-positive way. Imagine lots of old people sitting around smoking pipes and basically being dicks and you'd be close the the general assumption. But take the people away and leave the happy clappy music and you might strangely fit yourself tapping away, but only when someone’s not looking of course. Electronic music, on the other hand, is seen by musical wankers as a so-called lazy genre because everything can be made off a laptop that costs less then an apparent limited edition guitar that cost silly amounts of money, people don’t see it as real music. Bosh away at a few keys and apparently whole tracks can be created in seconds. Apparently.

Still people can think what they want. Because we love and admire nearly everyone and everything in the big wide world, we instantly took to this new style of music when we heard it. Mixing and combining two things that shouldn’t really go, like water and electricity* the strangely merry strummings of folk music fused with some edgy electronic beats works well. It's class, because we say so.

A whole treasure trove of musically treats has been shoved up on the old Four Tet MySpace page for you to listen to. Pockets is our personal favourite number with a sleazy-sounding synth easing you in before it explodes into a dance floor stomper.
