Myspace Trawl – Example
We like stuff that's a bit different around here. Settling for poxy indie muck won’t do for us. This is why we launched the jaunty MySpace Trawl feature that each week attempts to show you there’s more to life than all the crap bands going to play Live Earth.
This week we aim to bring you an artist who is breaking the strong stereotypical mould in a genre that has pretty much always been surrounded by wave after wave of thuggish soundalikes with nothing new to say. Of course we are talking about rap music, something mostly popular in America. But we are happy to announce that we have found Example, who is English and a Caucasian! Usually we’d peddle off and make lots of stupid jokes about most American rap being full of the same old repetitive shit about guns, women, champagne and bling. To an extent this is true, but we’d probably upset a few people and make them go off crying to their daddies.
Instead, we will let you know the raw details. Example is English! Yes he’s from Blighty and raps about English things like how crap the NHS while making lots of cultural references about people we've actually heard of, from Girls Aloud to jail-dodger Pete Doherty. The best track by a mile on Example's MySpace site has to be a record that has already been played on the radio to some sort of success. You Can’t Rap is a self-targeted taunt about the basic fact that Example is white and from England. Whenever anyone usually tries to rap with those credentials, the usual result is that they end up getting called a wigga or a stupid fucking tosspot. But here Example delivers cool rap music without having to make a million references to the fact that he’s gonna kill his mother/ wife/ dog.
