MySpace Trawl – Emmet
As regular as clockwork, it's time for hecklerspray’s MySpace Trawl – where we guide you towards music that’s good for you and keep you away from all the rubbish that seems to get all the attention in the pop charts.
We’ve decided this week to look at a style of music we haven’t focused on for a while. This week’s band are Emmet, who hail from the sunny north-west of England. Emmet are a fusion of electronica, techno and house all smashed together to produce sounds that would definitely get you up and dancing on a Friday or Saturday night.
Many a person says that dance music of any kind is repetitive and slowly dying in popularity. But usually these type of comments come from people who are diehard fans of another musical genre and have nothing better to do then to poke fun at other people's tastes. And we'd never do that. Ahem.
It seems that some dance artists have taken those comments to heart and haven’t produced an album of any quality in years. Whilst the nineties and early noughties saw the success of Underworld, Massive Attack, Faithless, Prodigy, Basement Jaxx and The Chemical Brothers, they haven’t recently produced an album to blow us all away. Someone needs to come along to make records that will hopefully get more people into electronic and dance music, and we're hoping that Emmet will be the boys to do this. If you check out the Emmet MySpace page, you’ll be gifted four techno-driven tracks to shake your ass to. And if you're at a party, why not play the tracks too? We’re now confident that a party is not a party until some Emmet is played.
Whilst there seems to be an explosion of chav-sounding dance music where there is a horrible fast beat with squeaky and mostly unlistenable vocals, Emmet have come along and shown them how to do it. The track Headcharge combines a crunchy broken breakbeat sound with a pleasant-sounding vocal, which bares an uncanny resemblance to certain Orbital tracks. That’s usually one of the flaws in electronic music, getting the vocals to fit in and match the pace of the song. Trying to have a soulful and melodic voice under a song going stupidly fast never works. Despite being fairly new to the electronic scene, Emmet have already hosted a few gigs, with footage of them already on their MySpace page.
Live dance music, too – they're not hiding behind a mountain of laptops and mixing desks like so many anonymous dance artists do. Emmet have tried to make it as live as people, using guitars, drums, keyboards and live vocalists. And it works. Hopefully more people will take notice of Emmet's live setup and follow suit.
Thus far, 2946 people have checked out these lads, why not boost the numbers by visiting the Emmet MySpace page where you'll find various pieces of live footage and, of course, four stomping songs for you to listen at your pleasure.
