MySpace Trawl – Unicorn Dream Attack

Honestly we haven’t been picking bands based on their name over the last few weeks. It just seems that the people out there with the more bonkers names are capturing our attention.
We’re sure that if someone decided to call themselves Generic Sounding Indie we’d listen too. We’re nice people and we give everyone a fair chance. After last week’s look into the world of the cover version, we’ve gone back to look at some music which makes us want to dance in the street and force others to join us. Sadly we were detained by the police for grabbing people and waving their arms frantically around. Some call that partial assault but we call it a discothèque groovetastic move.
But who could blame us when we were listening to Unicorn Dream Attack.
We always thought that Unicorns were nice gentle creatures that would gingerly munch on a sugar cube out of your hand, appear in wizard films and frequently star in fantasy books or something like that. But if they attack that’s another matter. Maybe the creator of the sounds that Unicorn Dream Attack make had some traumatic childhood experience. We’d dare not ask.
The band falls under the generic category of electronica/IDM/electro but, more specifically, they are another delightful chip band.
Before anyone asks, they don’t create their sound by taking various bags of frozen chips, connecting them to the mains plug, rubbing them together and running the various sounds through a keyboard. That would just be silly and something we will probably now try the next time we are drunk. As we’ve explained before from other artists doing this sort of thing, it’s all down to techniques such as using Gameboys, other old computer equipment, and circuit-bending. Well we think so anyway.
Of course the more sceptical will just expect an awful reminder of the music played in a Super Mario game when our beloved Italian plumber Mario runs around like a moron jumping on baddies' heads so he can rescue the princess before losing her again ten minutes later.
But it can sound quite interesting and some people such as Unicorn Dream Attack have taken the initial sound, built upon it and created something scarily addictive to listen to. With the majority of the tracks being instrumental, you will quickly find yourself humming along to the happy synths and processed beats immediately.
Our favourite of the songs is the oddly titled b34utiful 3y3s which we can only assume means 'beautiful eyes' once translated from computer speak to English. Starting as it means to go on, the layered synths are quickly added to with chunky beats that do not follow the typical drum structure for a traditional song. Its fast, addictive pace has caused us to frequently listen to it over and over again.
But, with the other five songs up there, you may find one of those to be your favourite. However, we must warn you that they are as good as each other and should be played loud at any party for maximum effect, craziness and fun.
Unlike a lot of small artists, Unicorn Dream Attack has got off his arse and actually put out an album for you to physically touch and worship! Obviously he’s come to the conclusion someone won’t knock on his door waving a record contract under his nose.
