Myspace Trawl – The Sky This Night

Bah, it's cold, wet, dark and the high street has an unusually high amount of charity representatives asking us for money, even though we barely have enough of our own to buy our friends and family anything better then a box of Lego for Christmas.
Because it's winter we thought we’d calm the mood down a little and bring you some music that everyone can relax to, At first we were looking for some kind of Sigur Ros meets Explosions In The Sky style band that results in some sort of ridiculously gorgeous musical offspring. But then again that might be a little bit boring. This was until we came across The Sky This Night.
Whilst all the traditional ambient stuff is starting to sound a bit samey we hope you will notice the difference in this week’s artist. Well, did you expect us to recommend some sort of Christmas carol-singing mega deathmetal band? Yet again, the whole sound of The Sky This Night comes one talented artist called Dan Traynor who hails from musical province of Manchester. You may have heard of some of the other bands that have come from there like The Smiths and Oasis.
So what’s the difference between our latest find and said Manchester bands? While the others have a strong-branded image of either having a) a potentially racist-sounding ex-frontman and b) a brother duo whose off-the-record behaviour gets them more attention then their samey music, The Sky This Night so far only has epic-sounding music to use as a voice. Without a massive budget behind him to market his work, only the music is left to do the talking.
Taken from a record entitled Volume Zero, the four tracks on his MySpace page take us through a quick journey of what can only be described as the soundtrack to the average person’s day. The Silver Kiss starts as it means to go on with a hazy-sounding riff that takes us back to warmer times of sitting down and watching the world go by around us as we contemplate what is next to come.
The second track, Abstract Universe, couldn’t be called a filler track of such, but the quickness of it makes us want more! Almost sounding like it should accompany a scene in a film where people are hurriedly dashing around either looking for something or someone. At this point it is vital to point out that some of the influences in this artist's work are those of music and film settings. At this point in time it's like Dan Traynor has written the score for the most amazing film that is yet to either be completed or had the honour to be matched to his epic-sounding material.
He has certainly reached his aim when he describes his sound as 'film trailer music'.
