MySpace Trawl is a weekly guide to music that is exciting, fun and just so happens to tell the mainstream to fuck off.
We like to think we’re open-minded people and on this page we’ll try and cover everything from mind-bending white noise to moody-sounding guitar sounds laced with electronics and other oddities. After going on a recent bender with stuff that may not to be to everyone’s taste, this week we thought it was about time to go back to the instrument that nearly everyone loves. The good old guitar. Even supposed 'fake' music like electronica uses it, contrary to some people’s impressions. This week, we bring you Slow Club – a band that makes us smile and want to run around like morons.
Suffering from a bout of insomnia after drinking too much coffee, we got bored recently and decided to explore the wonders of late-night TV. After laughing at the shopping channels and watching as much of The Jeremy Kyle Show as we could bear, we came to the music channels.
This is where we saw Slow Club and the video for Me And You. And it was a revelation – the song is what The Flaming Lips would sound like if they were forced to play acoustically and exist on nothing but bags of sugar.
We really like Slow Club because of their very stripped-down sound and lyrics about anything and everything. There’s just something about their sound that will make you want to sing and dance like a complete fool. Shout-out choruses will get stuck in your head, similar to the worst kind of pop songs that come from people like Girls Aloud but without the guilt. “Me and you, last time we spoke I thought we were through” might not sound like much written down, but when sung to a mental-sounding guitar riff, it's all good once it gets going.
We were even quite taken by the Me And You video. While in no way does it have the same production budget as someone like Kanye West, it nevertheless looks like it was a lot fun to film. Who could complain when you have roller-skates, balloons, a skate park and your mates around? Not us, that’s us for sure. You don’t have to dress as Jesus to make a class video! It probably won’t be nominated for any video awards soon due to the band being so unknown in the mainstream, but they can sleep sound knowing its better then Britney Spears' last piss-poor effort.
Already signed to the excellent Moshi Moshi label, Slow Club are slowly but surely making a name for themselves. With sessions being recorded for BBC 6 Music, we predict big thing for Slow Club next year, especially on the radio front. Hopefully an album will emerge and we can wear our big smiles outside when we listen to their own breed of happiness in three or four minute bursts on our iPods. More songs, videos and a host of other treats are up on the band's MySpace page now. Go visit it now! It’s one of our favourite finds so this year.
