MySpace Trawl – Frankie & The Heartstrings

Frankie & The Heartstrings, MyspaceNow it’s not like hecklerspray to be rude about people. That just isn’t in our nature. We’re all for peace, love and the giving of cake.

But sometimes we do get a little bit bothered about stuff. Some folk may say we’re just being bellends and need to grow up, but just hold tight with us on this one. We need complain about an age-old musical debate.

We tend to find that the vast majority of artists and bands come from the south of the UK. Is it because everything up north is bleak and miserable? Or down to people not wanting to leave the cosiness of London? We believe it to be the latter option. You can make amazing music and not come from Camden and be decked out in skinny jeans and dodgy jackets. Let us bring to you Frankie & The Heartstrings who should be everyone’s favourite new band by the end of the year.

Annoyingly, we can’t bang on about how brilliant this Sunderland based band is. Why? Because no songs seem to be loading on their MySpace player. It’s either down to our internet being slow and letting us down, or Frankie & The Heartstrings being a cryptic bunch. After all, there is an email address left where you can contact the band. Will they send you back some MP3s or just abuse? Who knows? Give it a try. You might be lucky.

But you can deduce their sound from a live performance, filmed at an unknown location. For a band that has just started out, they work together, looking confident and having a laugh. None of this moody standing around and wishing it was all over so the money would come in.

And what do we like about them most? They have one of those brilliant carefree attitudes where they’ll do their own thing and won’t alter to pressure from others. Yes, other artists seem to blab on about that to, but slick-sounding guitar music isn’t the going trend at the moment. There isn’t a Korg keyboard in sight and no reverb laid over a track for that dubby feel.

I think you’ll find the Korg keyboard pretty prominent in the band’s set-up actually. Its played by ageing Wearside-scenester and former drummer in Kenickie Pete Gofton; who just happens to be Lauren Laverne’s brother – hence Frankie & The Heartstrings’ hype long before they were a fully formed band. I’m not necessarily saying they don’t warrant they attention- i’m explaining why they’re doing so well press-wise despite not having any songs out.
