MySpace Trawl – Head And Neck Sessions
Thursdays are when our bins are emptied and also when the council tend to shout at us for not separating our glass from our plastics. Unless you’re into recycling this is as thrilling as watching your Uncle Ben’s microwave rice cook.
However, something much more interesting and almost sexually arousing is our MySpace Trawl feature. We separate the gash from the good and guarantee to bring you musical acts that are different and interesting. This week’s artist could almost be confused for either an overpriced shampoo or a dodgy beauty salon that operates in a grubby council estate. Head and Neck Session are fortunately neither of the above but produce music that dots around the genres of ambiance, hip hop, jazz and electronics.
What people may not realise when the genres of 'hip-hop' and 'jazz' are mentioned is that they do have their own subtle variations. Jazz is often associated with images of decaying old men sitting in smokey rooms downing glass after glass of spirits. Of course, that’s all perfectly good and fine by us, but sometimes it scares off the kids who imagine they’ll be hounded by old men for invading their jazz quarters. Hip-hop suffers from the same problems as it’s just basically known for various rap dudes bragging about how big their gun is, how much expensive champagne they’ve downed and how much money they’ve put in front of a child before driving off in their pimped-up vehicle which is usually more expensive then the value of your house. We think it's time for a change.
With what could almost be described as lounge music to fit in to the background, Head And Neck Sessions have perfectly blended together gorgeous lo-fi electronics with gentle jazz rhythms. We can only describe them as the sort of group that visit many different musical places and slot in perfectly. From the first glints of morning sunlight to a hazy afternoon spent with friends, Head And Neck Sessions belong there.
The track flows is the best example of what we’ve just twittered in about. It’s has also just been released on Dancing Turtle records with another track entitled Twelve Twelve. The press blurb sums it up perfectly:
Debut vinyl release from one of the most exciting breakthrough acts in the realm of ambient live electronica, jazz and hip-hop. Head and Neck Sessions have created a progressive sound that is both vibrant and deeply seductive.
Only 500 of the records have been pressed up onto 7”. We strongly advise getting your hands on one of this year’s unsung musical gems. The track has something about it that is just begging for an advertiser to use it. Referring back to our earlier remark about the band creating a more chilled-out hip-hop style sound, the track throttle demonstrates that you can make a rap song which doesn’t talk about shootings, sex and swearwords.
Each of the five tracks available for listening has something that is deeply calming and exciting about it. 1212 Sessions is a simple-sounding song, but the results are deeply effective. We imagine that, when played live, it would silence the room so everyone there could appreciate what their ears are being exposed to. Most young artists and bands are not producing this sort of music. Instead, the constant barrage of guitar-led acts is a sight that doesn’t seem set to end. Even a one-off radio play on a mainstream radio show would demonstrate - not only to the audience, but the people in the industry - that this lot are brimming with talent and making music that is full of beauty.
