***LATEST MTV MUSIC VIDEO AWARD ODDS! CLICK HERE***
This weekend, the MTV Music Video Awards will take place in Miami. For some people, it’s a chance to gauge the popularity of different artists and attempt to understand the cultural relevance of music videos in the age of music downloads.
For us, however, it’s a chance to get filthy stinking rich by betting on the winners.
Today we’ll be looking at the nominees in the Best New Artist category. Who do MTV think has made the biggest splash with their debut album or singles this year? Judging by the majority of the shortlist, it looks as if MTV have used their foolproof "who’s got the best haircut?" criteria. But who are we to judge?
Here, brought to you by hecklerspray and Betfair.com, are the latest odds for the MTV MVA Best New Artist nominees…
Ciara – The Princess of Crunk & B – whatever the Dickens that means – has been having a fruitful year. Her album Goodies – a concept
album about Bill Oddie – and single 1, 2 Step have been riding high in
the sales and airplay charts have seen her become either ‘the new
Ashanti‘ or ‘the new Beyonce‘. She’s already no stranger to
controversy; she’s been the subject of disproved rumours that she was born a man. Current odds – 2/67
John Legend – These last twelve months have been John Legend’s
breakthrough year. In the past he’d played guitars on Lauren Hill songs
and sang backing vocals for Jay-Z, but with the release of his album
Get Lifted, Legend proved himself to be an artist in his own right.
It’s already an award-heavy year for him – he’s the BET Best New Artist
- and the MVAs might enlarge his haul. Current odds – 2/67
The Killers – fans of The Killers are usually people who say they
like alternative music but actually don’t. Their debut album Hot Fuss
has topped the charts and made global stars of them. Robbie Williams
sang a bit of their best song during his Live 8 performance. However,
the MVAs are kind of urban-centric this year, which doesn’t bode well
for The Killers. Current odds – 2/67
My Chemical Romance – Not really a new band at all, My Chemical
Romance are already on album number two, having been around for about
four years. But they still count as new artists, for some reason.
They’re a "dark and cathartic" pop-punk band, as if that’s some kind of
excuse for the lead singer dressing up like a sad teenage girl goth all the time.
Current odds – 1/50
The Game – The Game’s unique selling point is that he’s a better
rapper than 50 Cent, one of the least auspicious boasts ever made. Even we
can rap better than 50 Cent, and we’re rubbish. The Game has spent the last year compulsively trying to start fights with every single other rapper
in the world, even going so far as releasing a 15 minute track calling
all of G-Unit a big bunch of smelly girls with shitty bumholes, or
something. Current odds – 1/50
There’ll be more MTV MVA odds tomorrow, but in the meantime head over to the USA Special Bets
