There’s less than a week before the 2005 MTV Music Video Awards take place in Miami. And that means it’s another chance to make some money on the results.
Today we’ll be looking at the Best Hip-Hop Video category. Yes, we know we did the Best Rap Video category on Friday and, yes, we thought hip-hop and rap were the same thing too. But according to MTV they’re completely different to each other. And MTV is ’street’ and we’re quite obviously ‘not’, so we’ll have to take their word for it.
So here are the latest odds for the nominees in the Best Hip-Hop Video category, brought to you with Betfair.com.
Common: Go - Hip-hop’s answer to Uncle Albert from Only Fools And
Horses released the critically white-hot album Go earlier in the year,
and this was the first single from it. It can only really be described
as "bedroom hip-hop", as opposed to something else like "kitchen
hip-hop" or "attic hip-hop". The video is visually very impressive,
like the most expensive DFS advert ever. Current odds - 2/67
Missy Elliott w/Ciara & Fat Man Scoop:
Lose Control - Up for another award is Missy and her odd
electro-sampling, log-balancing, glued-to-a-wall video for Lose
Control. Missy sure does love barmy promos. While we’re on the subject,
though, when has it ever been a good idea to call yourself something
like Fat Man Scoop? It’s like being called Chronically Obese Spork.

Nas w/Olu
Dara: Bridging The Gap - In which Nas stars alongside his Dad, who sings
Nas’s life story in a Muddy Waters style, then Nas does a bit of
rapping. It’s also one of the only songs we’ve heard where an old man
does a shout out to Ray Charles at the end. In the video, there’s some
typical rappy stuff, plus a bunch of dancers dressed like Bugsy
Malone’s wet dream. Current odds - 1/50
Kanye West: Jesus Walks
- As well as producing Go, Kanye has one of his own songs nominated in
this category. Jesus Walks famously has three videos, including one
that - in a moment of stunning literalism - shows Jesus walking.
However, so huge is Kanye’s ego that if this song wins the award, he’ll
complain that Go didn’t win as well. Current odds - 1/50
Snoop
Dogg w/Pharrell: Drop It Like It’s Hot - hecklerspray dropped a
pizza tray once. It was very hot, and we burnt our hands quite badly.
This experience is chronicled in Snoop Dogg’s mega-hit Drop It Like
It’s Hot, which also features what sounds like Rolf Harris doing funny
sound effects all the way through. Rubbish video, mind. Current odds -
