Movie Review – Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen

Transformers 2, Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen, Transformers reviewBefore filming commenced, internet legend has it that Michael Bay challenged McG to a ‘dick measuring contest’ – equating to Terminator Salvation versus Transformers.

While it’s hard to tell who has the biggest dick from the movies alone, Bay wins on sheer balls – quite literally at one point. Revenge Of The Fallen is bigger, badder and stupider in every way than its predecessor.

Its a fantastic ride, but one that suffers from Bay’s trademark crash-bang editing, meaning you’ll remember the set pieces, but struggle to care about the plot.

If anyone cares, it turns out that our chunky metal pals have been on Earth for a looooong time and first started showing up around 20,000BC (subtly illustrated with a cavemen vs killer robot fight). When our hero, Sam (Shia LaBeouf) accidentally gets some alien knowledge stuck in his noggin, it sets up a race around the world to find something called ‘the Matrix’ and thwart eeeeevil British robot ‘The Fallen’.

Yep, it’s a biblical allegory with added robot combat and, frankly, it’s all the better for it. Obama may want to take credit for bringing the boys home from Iraq, but it looks like most of them were needed to work on this, with masses of tanks, choppers and troops blowing the hell out of everything in sight throughout.

The film’s target audience is 15-year-old boys, and they get well and truly served with the explosive combo of sunset battles, cool cars, ultraviolence and Megan Fox‘s super-tight jeans.

Robot-wise, the big names from the first film are back, with plenty of Starscream/Megatron bitching and a completely insane opening sequence in Shanghai, with Optimus Prime duking it out with what appears to be a demented, giant unicycle. Optimus gets an upgrade here too, with glowing sword attachments that will bring tears to the eye of 30-something men everywhere.

The films biggest problem is its choppy style, which shows up every flaw in the exo-skeleton. The movie tries a little too hard to be funny, with the always-value-for-money John Turturro fighting to keep his secret Agent wannabe afloat, and far, far too much comic relief. The idea of twins who talk in hip-hop rhymes may have been amusing in a cartoon when you were eight, but here it feels like overkill.

Gripes aside, this does exactly what you expect from a Bay film. Explosions, hot girls, piles of military hardware and nary a thought for plot as it hurtles recklessly toward an epic, money-shot climactic fight outside the pyramids. We get to see every penny of the CGI budget onscreen as upwards of 40 robots collide. If there isn’t a part of you that doesn’t enjoy the site of an especially massive robot called ‘Devastator’, complete with two huge wrecking balls between its legs, punching the top off the Sphinx, I pity you.

Crazed, hyperactive and nonsensical. It’s also curiously lovable and a true multiplex movie. Roll out and see it now.

I saw the trailer to this last weekend. It was literally 2.5 minutes of solid explosions, then a 5 second appearance from the crap one and the overrated one in which they managed to get out about two words each and it was all over. Needless to say, I booked up on the spot.

just seen the movie. absolutely awesome, I am 45 years old and it was great from beginning to end. Megan Fox is hot and can act as well. It is a rush with non stop action but my test is to come out of film and actually want to queue again immediately to watch again. I am sure everyone from 15 to 50 will enjoy it.

Saw Revenge of the Fallen today and it absolutely surpassed everything I expected. I’m not going to talk about the story as I think you just need to go and see it. I am going to see this again next week at the imax and i’ve never paid to see a film more than once. Personally and I am sure I won’t be the only person who thinks this; This is the greatest film i’ve ever seen, brilliant story (whatever the reviewer said about the plot is off his head) god knows what they spent on this film but it’s even better than the first and beats every action film i’ve ever seen hands down, including the Matrix.

I think every person who loved the show in the 80′s will love this movie even more for the tie ins and original bits they’ve thrown in.

I can’t wait for Blu Ray!!!!!!!!

I completely agree with you 100%. Bad reviews ARE are about things that do not matter. Yeah, it was a little bit long, but why not sit and watch the rest of the CG budget put up on screen? I would definitely see Transformers 3, if they decide to make another one. I’m 16 as well.

Its alright not a superb movie..me giving it like 7 out 10. The script was a bit flakey..and the action was too fast and too much to the extent i didnt know what was happening.!!!
The characters were pretty bad in terms of acting and performance not to say theplot!!

I gave the first one 9 out of 10…and that was cos it was awesome!!.. i dont think they will live up to the first one.. The sequel..well it wasnt all that!!

New autobots and decepticons, fantastic visual effects, explosions, high speed races..funny bits…what more can a girl want.well o.k.. Sam could have been a bit easier on the eye..but hey can’t have everything! I’m a 35 year old Mum who has just been transformed into an Optimus Prime fan!

The best 2.5 hours of escapism I’ve had in years…loved it..got the blu-ray on my xmas list already!

Saw the movie today.
Wasn’t impressed. It was a disappoinment. You saw more of the Camerra than bumble bee. Wasn’t happy that he lost his voice again and didn’t speak.

The two twin autobots were pretty pointless and the ‘sex’ talk wasn’t relevant.
I admit it made me cry towards the end which i won’t spoil. But overall after seeing it, i walked out with no smile on my face.

The first transformers; i walked out with the biggest smile saying it was one of the best films i’ve EVER seen. I didn’t say it this time.

It ended very suddenly with the last shot featuring no bumble bee or other autobots. Not what i expected when it runs for nearly 3 hours.

Parts of the graphics i wasn’t overly impressed with.
Sorry guys, i wouldn’t see it again until dvd release.

Reply

Josh June 23, 2009 at 11:09 pm

Ye i have to agree with you Charlotte.
There were scene’s in this movie where i was thinking; why?
Some scene’s were just to show off, and im not talking about scene’s where Optimus/Megatron is in, but scene’s where they just wanted to show Megan Fox. No offence, the girl is hot and beautifull, but wth.. every little scene there was this *look how hot Megan is for 10seconds now*.

There were funny parts in the movie, but they became annoying, i think you could replace the twins for a better Autobot, like Brawn of Wheeljack. Overall the some of the funny part could be skipped to make this movie a bit shorter.
And whats the deal with Sideswipe.. he hardly received screenplay.. i only saw him like 4-5 times?
Furthermore they said 40+ Transformers.. i only counted.. like 12 from the originals.. The others were like Cybertronian junk who died after 1 gunshot..And my oh my since when is Devastator a Cat-like thing? I expected a Bigass robot who could actually do some sick-ass shi*.

Like you said, the first Transformers movie, i was like.. omg this movie is wicked! I talked the whole night about it. And now 1.5h passed by when i saw the movie, and searching for reviews about the movie help me to decide if it was a great movie or not.

Overall i give this movie 7/10. Maybe because i was expecting to much of it. And maybe because i’m more of the original G1 Transformers fan, but this plot, i mean Megatron as a “disciple” i can’t picture that. Better for them to make Unicron as final boss.. maybe not a bad idea if Bay decides to make a TF:3 in 2012. The actions were packed. It still gave me the chills when they Transforms, especially when they formed Devastator (end result was decent tho) And it had a ok balance as in Action/Comedy.

Anyways its a OK movie, dont expect to much from it. Or maybe im just ranting because im more fan from the original plot.
In short; not the greatest movie this year, but still a must see on the screens

Greets Josh, The Netherlands.

Very good film i would say. Yes the plot was terrible, yes Michael Bay isn’t the best director out there and a lot of the acting was wooden. Some of the CGI wasn’t too impressive and at times it is difficult to tell the good guys from bad guys at some points.
But….. this was made up for by the comedy, megan fox of course and the twins are just great, plus the little RC – i want one! Also the action scenes were in the majority very good with a double helping of explosions and robots. I do have to say that the film does end rather abruptly and it seems as if Bay lost interest at the end (though i didnt watch all of the credits!). We don’t get to see the new characters we have come to love at the end that are mentioned above and their fate is undisclosed which is sloppy.

I’m looking forward to the next film, which would be improved by a new director and the most important element – DINOBOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you like transformers 1 then multiply it 10x for Transformer 2.
Me and friends will gonna watch it again… and again.. and again.

Mss. FOx….so …. wow.

To those bad critics… I can’t get your points… this is a Transformer movie, if you don’t like this kind of movie then don’t comment. If you want drama then watch a drama movie. If you want a short movie then watch short movie. How could you rate this movie if on the first place you didn’t like this type of Genre. STUPIDS.

- this is a Transformer movie; since when does Transformers teenage jokes, Where was the action of the other Transformers, they hardly received screenplay (Ironhide/Ratchet/Sideswipe), where was Barricade?

- if you don’t like this kind of movie then don’t comment; This is the 2nd movie, i watched the 1st movie like 10times and i was still speechless at the end.. this one.. no just no..

- If you want drama then watch a drama movie; you fail this kind of quotes are just random bulls*hit, better to say nothing instead of saying crap like this

- If you want a short movie then watch short movie; another fail one. The Dark Knight was as long as this movie but i didn’t complain about the length because every single minute of the movie had a meaning. I.E Transformers2.. the mother smoking weed/eating hasjbrownies.. w/e

- How could you rate this movie if on the first place you didn’t like this type of Genre; Here we go again, this is a Sequel of the 1st movie, same genre, same type, same producer.. i can’t see people disliking the 1st movie going to the 2nd?

- Stupid; certainly you IF you don’t respect other comments and criticism.

To this guy you say when do transformers make teenage joke….if u wanted the cartoon go watch the cartoon…you can make the movie and cartoon the exact same and stop complaining they didn’t put everyone in there if they did ud be watching the movie for 7 hours…that right there just proved most of your argument incunclusive..and whoever says they acting was bad is straight up dumb.

So you can only comment if you like the movie? Doesn’t that seem to be a bit subjective? These forums are to let you tell how you feel about the movie whether it’s positive or negative. Grow up kid.

Just out of the theater and this movie is ridiculous… The first thing that come to my mind is : ‘it’s an American Pie with robots’…Average teenage humor everywhere, selling the bodies of hot girls from time to time, pointless-uninteresting story, bad acting, excellent special effect, lots of action, waste of time with the pseudo drama of Sam stupid family and pseudo waste of time with his loved one… The movie is very, very, stupid… Everything for the eyes, nothing for the brain… The first Transformer was ok but the second one purpose is visibly to make fast profit over the good reputation of the first one, it’s visibly destined toward stupid people (or young people…)… but you know what they say, stupid people exists, they’re to stupid to know that they’re stupid, but, since they exist, they need movies to fulfill their simple needs so it’s ok that Transformer 2 exist… If you’re intelligent, you won’t be satisfied by this brainless peace of crap, at all… Truth hurts, but truth is constructive… They won’t have my money for a 3rd installment, I’ve learned the lesson… But I’m happy for those who can be satisfied with this very low quality product and I must say in all honesty that you fascinate me… 2/10 if we do not consider the special effects, 4/10 considering the special effects…

I can look past the teeny-bopper antics just to see the fast action fight scenes and giant robots kicking the snot out of one another. Jaw-Dropping CGI at its finest. This movie is not gonna have the best plot. Like someone said earlier….if you wanna see a drama movie go see a drama movie. this is just full of action at its finest!!!

Ok, I literally just got back from seeing Transformers 2. All I can say is I was very surprised about this movie and was not sure how it would turn out. I loved this movie quite a bit and will be seeing it again in the theatres. I wish Munich had an English IMAX because that would be simply amazing on the IMAX. I loved the action and even though megan Fox has increased the size of her lips… yes she is still a hottie. I must say that this movie got me all pumped up that I am turning on the DVD and popping in “Transformers the Movie(Cartoon)”.

To me this movie and the cartoons were a lot about the relationships between the Autobots and their human counterparts, to me from the beginning of the movie it’s in place, especially with the drop in of the “Big Guy” and both humans and autobots fighting side by side. I loved and thought it was so cool how the Shanghai stint went.

The movie was funny and kept me laughing, and your right… That scene in the bathroom was freekin hillarious! and to the person stating you couldn’t tell bot from bot… well that’s kind of the point, that usually without insignias you wouldnt be able to tell who was who unless you were an Autobot or Decepticon or followed the cartoons etc and know most of them.

I cant wait until they bring in Slag, Grimlock, Swoop (Dinobots for those that don’t remember) etc.

All in all I would definitely not wait to get a DVD, see this in the theatres since an action film is just never the same at home. Unless you have a home theatre built into your basement but still this on an IMAX? I would love it.

For the haters? keep hating, it doesnt affect my view one bit. Everyone has their own tastes and vews and I am glad we are able to express them all.

Time to go watch “Transformers the Movie(Cartoon)” Laters…

Yes, but people don’t always know that they’re going to be “stupid” – that’s why you GO and and see it, DUMBass. However, I can agree that the first one was very good – good graphics and good plot and that makes people give the benefit of the doubt that the sequel will be good and they go see it. But people aren’t mind readers either and there is something called a difference of opinion. And trust me, there is no sarcasm here either.

Are you serious critics?
This movie had to have been one of the most astronomically colossal movies of the year!
I decide to go watch the movie this morning, watch the entire breathtaking 140 minutes of intensity and excitement, get home, and choose to see what the critics had to say. I am breath taken about every single one of there reviews, shocked, amazed.
Every single bald headed ass scratching review writer out there decided to take one of the best movies of 2009 and turn it into a wreck. Critics such as them love the attention, if one critic decides to write up a very unexpected astonishingly shocking review, every other idiotic reviewer is going to do the same thing.
My opinion, do NOT listen to those reviewers, if you liked the trailer or if you are drawn to special effects. GO.

I absolutely LOVED this movie! I made sure to buy my tickets for the 12:01am showing on Fandango so I wouldn’t have to wait in any lines. Lol I even bought an autobots shirt from Hot Topic (a store I usually refuse to step foot in). I thought this movie was 10x better than the first. A lot more action and comedy and sad parts. the two Transformers movies are my all-time favorite movies. I thought Megans acting was so much better in this one. She was great. I do think Micheal Bay went a little overboard on showing how sexy she is, but it is what it is. Shia and the rest of the cast did awesome. And I love how there were more autobots/decepticons. I almost had a mental breakdown bc there were technical difficulties and the movie started late, but it was definitely worth the wait. Whoever says this movie was bad is entitled to their own opinion but I think you’re crazy. This movie was AMAZING!!! I can’t wait for it to come out on DVD. Shoot, I’ll probably go see it in theaters again once all the craziness calms down. I know they made good money off this film. At the theater I went to, one of the employees said all 10 showings for the 12:01 show were already sold out, and it was only 10:45. This movie definitely made my summer, and its only June lol. Everyone should definitely go see this.

It was still pretty cool. Optimus continues to kick ass. Plus, I never saw the first transformers. I was relieved that I could still follow the movie!

This movie was great … Some parts should have been left out… Like the angel transformers… But the twins were crazy… Ya I busted out yo head… You can’t eat me fool… And he got eated they eated him.. Lol

best scene of the movie though….. Bumblebee beasting on 2 decepticons at once… That one should go for best fight scene

jetfire was amazing….

Super optimus prime could have left off the jetpack and been awesome

ya more sideswipe would have been nice .. And ya I also wondered why most of the autobots from part 1 were left in the background

last…. Soundwave….not fight scenes… Dammit

Kidding me ? This movie is horrid, made for 4-10 year old kids. Story is terrible, the jokes are the opposite of funny (and way too much of them) and the action scenes, even tho the CGI is damn good stuff, are just a chaotic blur.

2/10

just what kinda story line do you expect from a cartoon based action movie? The story was pretty straight forward and easy to understand and it also smoothly continues from where the first movie left off.. its like youre saying you didnt enjoy watching a porn because it didnt have a perfect storyline..

great movie, transformer 2.

Somehow I don’t identify with most of the negative reviews. I totally enjoyed this movie…I mean every second of it. It had me wishing that it never ends. While I agree that the humour/comedic portions of the film could have been lessened to make room for more autobots they were all very funny.

Somebody even made a comment that there negative references to muslim or something of the sort…I’m like WTF, did we watch the same movie, because I know I didn’t even leave my seat during intermission.

Overall the movie was execellent…action sequence, comedic value, the acting wasn’t that bad but would agree that the storyline was under developed or weak, but not in a way that detracts from a movie about robots and mayhem.

My advice go see the movie and form your own opinion, if you really don’t like it then…oh well that’s just too bad.

Critics will say that there’s no plot, but that’s because they couldn’t follow a plot if that plot was quadrupedal and had had three of its limbs broken. Anything more complex than ‘Spider Man’ throws most critics in this day and age of gnat-like attention spans.

Revenge of The Fallen does precisely what it says on the tin, then adds explosions and violence on top that make the cartoons look like the trivial fare they were (albeit fondly-remembered trivial fare).

Robots, big ones, pounding the crap out of each other. Repeatedly. An aeons-long struggle between Autobot and Decepticon. Humans, caught in the middle. If you expected more than a worthy reimagining of the original series, then it’s your expectations that are broken, not the movie, and you should be elsewhere.

That’s my opinion, and it’s the only one that counts.

THIS MOVIE IS OFF THE DAMN HOOK!!! I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN, BUT I WILL SAY THAT THE ACTION, SPECIAL EFX, JOKES, PUNCH LINES, ACTORS WERE EXCELLENT!! I COULDN’T HAVE ASKED TO SEE A BETTER ACTION MOVIE AND IT MADE MY SUMMER. TO THE BAD CRITICS, MICHAEL BAY, IS AN ACTION DIRECTOR PEOPLE, NOT A DRAMA DIRECTOR ADN EVEN THEN HE THREW IN A LITTLE DRAMA FOR YOUR ASSES!! BUBBLE BEE WAS THE TRUTH, IRONHIDE, AND IF COURSE OPTIMUS PRIME!! THEY EVEN HAD THE NEW VETTE (CORVETTE) REPLACING “JAZZ” (AS MY SON CALLS HIM) THAT GOT KILLED BY MEGATRON IN THE FIRST MOVIE! I THOUGHT THE TWINS WERE THERE FOR THE LAUGHS (WHICH, WAS COOL WITH ME)!! I WILL SEE THIS AGAIN AND I AM WAITING FOR IT TO COME OUT ON DVD, BUT YOU MUST SEE IT IN THE THEATRES TO GET THE FULL EFFECT! I GIVE IT A 15 OUT OF 10!!! TRANSFORMERS ROCK (AND I HOPE THE MOVIES CRITICS READ THIS WEBSITE AND THE COMMENTS!! GO SEE, GO SEE, GO SEE!!!

WARNING MAYBE BE SPOILER FOR POEPLE THAT HAVE NOT SEEN IT

I liked the movie it was great . Except for some fighting parts you dont know what they were doing cause it moved so fast pace . Also for the twins alot of people complaining about it . They were fine to me they made me laught alittle . The only thing i hated was devastator i thought he was really ganna kick some ass once he combined . But instead he was a vaccum cleaner sucking everything up lol. And he get one shotted what a load of crap. My son loved it he wants to go see it again . And i think the kids that sat next to me and my son was sad when optimus died and when Sam died and had his little talk with the orginal primes. lol there nose were running lol

Im glad that they didnt follow the animated story lines. Why cause i dont wanna see a new movie that i already know whats ganna happen next. Im 29 now so i grew watching almost all the transformers after coming home from school. If you go in thinking there ganna follow the animated story line you already fail . They didnt do it for part 1 what make you think there ganna do it for part 2 . Which made me want to see it even more because i didnt know what to expect. So if you havent seen it go in there not expecting to much. And please dont go in there looking for racist crap its the movies for entertainment.

Oh one more thing optimus and bumble bee kicked some ass in this one loved the action just wish i knew wat they were doing at some parts lol . Prime taking on like 3-5 decepticons was awsome. Then he got cheap shotted lol.

I give it a 8/10 score just cause devastator was big disappointment lol . And Soundwave got stuck in space hugging a satelite tapping in to our communications. And the to fast pace fighting scene where i realy couldnt catch what was goin on . I really hope theres a part 3 hope theres unicron in there that would be a major explosion fest

I really couldn’t care less for the plot, but at least there was one.. A Transformers movie isn’t really supposed to be smart or intellectual or have a great plot.. it’s all about the CGI, explosions, great sound, light and physics special effects… the first movie didn’t have a great plot either.. aliens find artifact in planet -> go there -> each faction tries to acquire it -> they battle -> one wins the other doesn’t.

I think the Megan Fox factor was a little exaggerated. And what about the 100% hot chicks/guys college campus? will they transform into regular people…? come on… megan fox is extremely beautiful, but having all of them look really really hot turns that campus part into a cheesy, cliché, stupid part as those “brainless teenagers gone wild” movies.. it just looks as if they were trying to please the non transformers-fans with.. well.. sex! For the extra cash, that is..

I loved soundwave. obviously you wouldn’t have a boombox turning into a heavy-explosive resistant behemoth, but the concept of a communications satellite controlling all from above sounds and looks both smart and amazing…!!

Jetfire was great. too bad he died i was expecting him to recover from the matrix voodoo robot healing magic.. lol.

the massive decepticon was awesome. i HATED the DEUS-EX-MACHINA stupid railgun from the destroyer (STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID idiotic thinking damn it…….) and the “well mister commander of a very very big and important FLEET, i am a guy with a funny accent and part of a deceased organization and i sound angry, so you must obey me and will absolutely fire the never invented before till.. NOW railgun and kill the coke-snorting testicles bot.”

the twins were funny, but annoying. the part where one of them almost gets eaten is crap. some minutes later they disappear and no long pose a threat to the testies bot. wtf?

the chopper decepticon dies :( it was my favorite.

wasn’t the decepticon tank killed in the previous movie?

staricescream rocks.

the fallen should have never existed.. it discredits the megatron in terms of power and leadership. megatron should be the other prime..! its stupid that in the first movie megatron whoops optimus’s ass, but then he has a godlike master that is killed in like 2 minutes by optimus prime.. its like playing rock-paper-scissors….

LOVED the movie and will see it again in the movies!

There’s a website dedicated to Michael Bay, Michael Bay Facts. I found it quite amusing.

Movie is dragging. Especially the part where they had to bring the matrix to optimus prime. Took about half an hour or more running. Geez. Anyway, well most people in the theatre were already up to leave even before the movie came to it’s end. I dunno what that means, but you figure it out.

BOTTOM LINE, if you loved the first, you’ll love this more.

People who did not like this movie have different tastes, no different to some people hating vegitables…read their opinions but don’t let it discourage…as soon as the movie starts you’ll see how little their opinion means to you.

Enjoy the movie…I so many times wanted to jump up to yell and Cheer!
