Your name is Kanye West, and you’re current Hip Hop’s brightest star. You just knocked ’em dead at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, and then step off stage dripping with sweat and smiling from a job well done. Then your boss gives you some strange, horrible and shocking news.
He wants you to save Michael Jackson‘s career real quick. As if that’s not enough, you’ve gotta make R. Kelly, Ciara and Jermaine Jackson all sound good in the process, and that weird little nose is supposed to be contagious. Sometimes a fella just can’t win.
Kanye, in light of your new predicament, we recommend you pray. It seems to have gotten the Pope off the hook.
Kanye West (CDs) is under strict orders to resuscitate Michael Jackson’s
career by helping him with his Katrina relief single – I Have This
Dream. And what do you know, he’s agreed to do it. Rumour has it the
two are currently in a London studio hard at work. They’ve been put
there by Island/Def Jam Chairman Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid, who likely thinks
he’s on to something.
And he probably is, as far as moving records go. Jackson’s last
release – a greatest hits record, sold a lousy 8,000 copies in its first
week of US release, likely due to absolute mountains of bad press
immediately preceding it. West, on the other hand, sold 860,000 in his
first week with his second release Late Registration. That’s a pretty
good horse to hitch Jackson’s wagon to. Rumour has it the release date
for I Have This Dream could be as close as within the next two weeks.
It’s an unlikely combination, it’s true. Michael Jackson and Kanye West are both headline
grabbers though. West’s most recent include cupping his hand on Pamela
Anderson’s sweet, sweet hepatitis riddled buttock, and dressing up as
the Only Begotten Son. Jackson’s more recent attention getters include
alleged giraffe cruelty, custody battles, and dressing up like lots of
begotten Middle Eastern daughters.
So long as their partnership endures, we here at the ‘spray would
like to see them work out a comedy routine. Picture this: They’re
both on stage and West says "President Bush don’t like black people,"
then Michael gets helicoptered to safety by US military choppers. The
crowd would be rolling.
Vaudeville, there’s plenty more where that came from.

Here we go again with the antsy comments regarding Michael Jackson.
The Katrina single is intended to help those who suffered during the flooding on the Gulf Coast. Even IF Jackson was doing this to try and resucitate his career, why do you care enough to write about it? Do you not think that helping those who suffered is more important than anything re; Jackson’s career?
You also mention Jackson’s album sales for his last release in the US – 8000. This was ONLY in the USA. In the UK he reached number 2 and around Europe it sold well even though it was the second Greatest Hits package in as many years (which sold 7 million copies). How many did you expect it to sell Mr music industry expert?
Michael Jackson has been in the Music industry since he was 6 – I think he is talented enough and wise enough to manage his own career. If recruiting a music star who is hot property right now will generate more sales for Katrina relief, why are you bothered by it? Bono released a charity single five years ago based on Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s going on?’. Does that mean he isn’t creative? Does that mean he was using Marvin Gaye to ‘save’ his band’s career? Why not write an article about that single and how it flopped too? You won’t? I wonder why.

I find it slightly worrying that those who dislike Michael Jackson spend more time talking about him and making stories, than those who actually like him and his music

fuck, if kanye’s really workin on this he’s probably working up a sweat too, working that motherfucker…the world is coming to an end but hopefully ‘Ye will make it thru…

Elaine, you silly girl – you do realise Kanye West has stated on numerous occasions that Michael Jackson has influenced him so your words sound kinda stupid and ignorant.
aggie says

He shouldve been found guilty – locked up and throw away the key forever..
One day when they open his cell all that’s left is this plastic thing

Aggie, I am sure Michael Jackson only wishes he had people like you on his side supporting him – not.
boo says
indeed, Michael Jackson is plainly the big influence to the black music biz — no one that’s not thrilled to work with him, ’cause he is a hit maker
Pete Doherty says
Michael Jackson has 17 GCSEs and a doctorate in astro-physics. He also is able to see everyday objects at a molecular level. What have you got, nasty website people? How many shit albums since 1984 have you made??? How many false accusations of child abuse have you made against Jarvis Cocker?? None? And you deem it fit to slight this modern day hero. Shame on you. Shame on you all.
John Hammer says
And if it wasn’t for him, who knows how long it would have taken for Black Music to be played on MTV. Some of the people hating on Michael Jackson need to take some music history lessons and show respect.
Isabelle says

It is extremely disturbing but ultimately self-defeting to focus so much energy on an individual who makes such an effort to help others. If only MJ had only started with Katrina then maybe… Let us not forget We Are The World and his tour of Africa at the peak of his career… Most artist only go where the money is. MJ has given more then any other entertainer to charity and not because he has the most to give.
MJ hasn’t lasted 40years because of the size of his nose… He is an extremely established artist uncomparable to any in this day and age.
As for media reporting on MJ, the Media has evidenced over the years that it is a self gratifying institution bent on setting trends as opposed to reporting them. The people now know better!
As for the sales of MJ; what is the discussion? MJ’s music and talent has reached more people currently living on the planet then any other artist (both past and present). How many have come and gone during the span of his career. Madonna had indicated to her record owner when she first got signed up that she wanted to be like MJ! 20 years later, you still have aspriring artists wanting to be like MJ.
Just face the reality, whatever the contraversies (and we know world isnt short of those) MJ is a classic that is immune to spoils of media jibberish!

I agree with the majority here… This article is obviously biased (like most others) to belittle Michael Jackson and his accomplishments. Yes, Michael has done some eccentric things in the last 10-15 years particularly that have generated massive controversy… but people are forgetting how incredible of an artist he is. He’s set a myriad of records with his music and has some incredible songs that still sound amazing today. How many people (who listened to pop music) do you know who didn’t like Michael Jackson in the 80s? The media needs to give him credit as a legendary figure for music if nothing else.
Lastly, I think it’s absolutely ridiculous to compare Michael near the end of his career with Kanye at his peak! Michael sold 40 million copies of Thriller (40 MILLION!) during his “peak” and over 120 million total! What about Kanye? Both of his LP’s combined probably don’t surpass 8 million (no, I don’t have exact figures but I’m quite sure it’s around there somewhere (at most)). Journalists need to start putting things in perspective before they go on degrading artist’s accomplishments… but what can you do… that’s what happens in show business, when image dictates how great your music is.
Kat says
Thriller actually sold over 50 million and in total he has sold around 175 million SOLO albums
