Make Our Minds Up: Kanye West - ‘Late Registration’

September 2nd, 2005 at 16:00 by Stuart Heritage

Late Registration, the second Kanye West album, was released on Monday. And people can’t seem to agree on if it’s a work of genius or a pile of nonsense.

Take Pitchfork’s reviewer, for example. He loves it:

"The sprawling Late Registration is the year’s most accomplished rap album, and
in turn, he’s done something that his heroes– the Pharcyde and Nas, and father figure Jay-Z– couldn’t do: deliver on a promise
the second time around.  With the help of co-producer Jon Brion, West has taken his jumbled personae, buoyant enthusiasm, and
vision for the grandiose, and transformed his chattering, seemingly unrealistic ideas into an expansive, imperfect masterpiece."

On the other hand, Byron Crawford says:

"What a poor fucking album."

It’s doing our heads in. Is Late Registration good or bad? We think we like it, but it’s a bit too long. We probably prefer Love Kraft.
