Ever since she adopted David Banda from Malawi and started to teach him how to do a ridiculous fake British accent just like her, Madonna has faced a barrage of concerned protests from every corner of the globe.
Most people in the same situation would have buckled under the pressure of all this controversy and tried to draw a line under the whole affair by quietly building a rocket and sending David Banda into space with just an oversized leotard and crystals contain Marlon Brando reading from Chicken Soup For The Soul to keep him company, but not Madonna. Madonna didn't get where she is today by listening to people. In fact, Madonna likes all the controversy so much that she might even adopt another baby from Africa, just for shits and giggles.
Whatever you think about Madonna, you have to admire her strength of mind. When she first went to Malawi to adopt a boy, most people's first impression was "She's just trying to copy Angelina Jolie! She'll be blacking up next!" but Madonna fought through these arguments – and, if reports are true, the arguments of her own husband – to adopt baby David Banda from Malawi and bring him back to England. It wasn't a smooth ride – everyone from David Banda's father to every human rights group in the world had their say on the matter – but the worst barrage of criticism came from the evil media, who seemed determined to tell the public what Madonna was doing, the bastards.
Luckily Madonna is an old hand at deal with the media – that's what decades of wanking at the Pope and spazzing around on a great big cross will get you – so Madonna knew exactly what to do. First thing was to find the world's most unthinkingly sympathetic audience to bleat to, so Madonna ended up talking adoption on Oprah. Next on Madonna's list was to conduct an interview with a serious British news programme inside a ludicrous set that appeared to have once been used for a Turkish Delight commercial, so Madonna appeared on Newsnight last night.
As we reported yesterday, Madonna used the Newsnight interview to explain that she offered to pay to keep David Banda in Malawi, but what we didn't report was that Madonna used the same interview to openly ponder the possibility of adopting another baby. We didn't report it but Reuters did:
Asked whether she would like to adopt another child, Madonna, 48, said: "I wouldn't rule it out. I would like it to not be as complicated in the future, but I would just like to experience David for a while and see how that works out first."
There'd also be a few provisos if Madonna ever chose to adopt another baby, we'd expect. Firstly she'd want one with a proper African name – a Nanji or an Odongo – because she could have just picked up a David from her local orphanage in retrospect. Also, the baby would have to have a skintone that complimented the latest Madonna-wear line at H&M. The ability to lie about the quality of Madonna's acting career is preferred, but not essential.
