They say that in a fire, it's the smoke that'll kill you. This is also true in the world of Lost, although there the smoke tends to kill you by making your son talk backwards and then picking you up and throwing you against a bunch of trees until you die.
That's the on-screen world of Lost, of course. The off-screen world of Lost is a little different; yesterday the home of Evangeline Lilly – who plays Kate in Lost – was destroyed in a house fire, and not a single wisp of black smoke turned into a playful horse or a man's dead father, and it didn't even think of showing anybody an important flashback of their life. Luckily Evangeline Lilly wasn't at home when her house burnt down but, now that she's homeless, maybe she'll have to temporarily bunk up with another Lost cast-member. We know what you're thinking – we wouldn't want to share with the fat guy either.
In Lost, John Locke is always carping on about how he's looked into the eye of the island and how beautiful it is. Well, in short, John Locke is a liar. The island bloody hates him. Not just him, either – the island hates everyone who has ever acted in Lost. Face facts, people – it was the island that plied Cynthia Watros and Michelle Rodriguez with booze and made them go driving, it was the island that threw Michelle Rodriguez in jail, it was the island that made Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje drive around all funny, it was the island that robbed Josh Holloway at gunpoint and we suspect that it's the island that burnt Evangeline Lilly's house down yesterday. E! Online reports:
The TV star's rented Kailua residence was gutted by fire early Wednesday. Fortunately, Lilly and her two roommates weren't home at the time of the blaze and no one was injured. A spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department says the cause of the fire remains under investigation. "Evangeline was on set already when the fire occurred," said publicist Cara Tripicchio. Wednesday was the final day of shooting on Lost's Waialua Beach location before the Christmas break.
The details of the fire that destroyed Evangeline Lilly's house aren't too clear at the moment, although a neighbour of hers claims that he heard electrical popping at 6:45am before realising that Lilly's house was engulfed in flames. When firefighters arrived, the fire was put out in around 20 minutes. While losing your house to a fire this close to Christmas is an awful thing to happen to anybody, E! Online points out a striking Lost coincidence that Evangeline Lilly must have figured out for herself right now:
A conflagration is central to the back story of Lilly's character, Kate. After taking out an insurance policy, Kate blows up her home, with her boozy, abusive stepdad inside, and she watches it burn to the ground. The incident launches Kate's career as a fugitive.
This on-screen/ off-screen Lost synergy isn't exclusive to Evangeline Lilly, either. In other news, Lost's Yunjin Kim has announced that – like her character – she has also fallen pregnant by a bald Korean dude who got thrown off a balcony, while Terry O'Quinn, who plays Locke, has reported suffering from strange airport hallucinations that go on for ten minutes and are really fucking boring. Spooky, huh?

How come Charlie’s the only one from Lost never to have anything rubbish happen to him in real life? Those darn derivative britpop heroin addict singers, they get all the luck
