Lost Episode 8 ‘Recon’: Deconstruction

This week marked the return of one of Lost’s most charismatic, beloved and endearing characters. No not Charlotte or Widmore, we’re talking about Goatskull Baby.

Yeah, Lost delivered a loving reunion between Claire and her bony baby, before Kate interrupted with her overwhelming blandness. Claire, fed-up of Kate’s throat, decided to take a note from her brother and perform an emergency tracheotomy on it. Note: Sayid’s looks of utter nonchalance at Claire’s throat slashing tactics – Amateur.

This episode was all about Sawyer, though, so most of the action was of the topless chiselled pecs variety. There was some stuff to note from this flash-sideways: Charlotte’s return was shocking, especially because she somehow became very attractive since the last time we saw her. But the big reveal was Sawyer’s profession as a cop and Miles as his partner (probably so they don’t have to waste any dialogue giving him his own episode this year).

Things to look out for: Miles’ mention of his Dad working in a museum, Sawyer still hunting Locke’s Dad for his parent’s murder and Charlie’s brother Liam at the police station. It wasn’t an episode of amazing revelations and it was left open-ended with Sawyer running into Kate.

Island action focused on Cocke’s band of merrymen, all of whom seem to be wondering – like us – whether the can trust the biggest man-boobs on the Island this side of Hurley. Sawyer was soon set on a recon mission (re-con…geddit? Those Lost creators are bloody clever), checking out the tiny island off of the main Island and having a good ol’ nosey on behalf of Smokey.

This led to a trip onto Charles Widmore’s submarine; a charming little aquatic affair, with a small crew/army, all apparently on task for bringing down the Lockeness Monster (see Lost, we can make clever play on words too). There was also some hidden room on the submarine – another mystery to add to the pile.

Sawyer comes back across the ocean again in his canoe (he really is a mug to do that twice on his own) and plays Cocke and Widmore against each other, not pledging his allegiance to either. He then tells Kate that he has his own plan. Hey! Did you think he’s going to fly the plane by himself off of the Island? Don’t be stupid. He’s taking the submarine! We must have missed the flashback where he became an Admiral in the Navy.

Still, at least the episode left us with one lingering mystery: what’s behind the Widmore’s door? Is it Desmond? A stash of manga-porn? Or the rest of the retired 90’s Neighbours cast? Our money’s on Ms. Hawking – the time travelling geriatric who Widmore once knocked up. She’s probably in there chained up to the bed with an apple in her mouth. Widmore looks like he’d be into that, the filthy bugger.
