And Jacob dragged only Hugo and Jack out of the Temple, I guess because they are so gullible, leaving the rest of his protégés at the mercy of some oncoming obscure entity. Truly a friend in need! Next thing we know, he'll try to convince Jack to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the island, or to kill Locke. The lighthouse was some kind of hypnotising device that drew the castaways to the island or a portal to the rest of the world (and a parallel universe?).
