Lost Episode 3 ‘What Kate Does’: A Deconstruction
It feels like there is little to do in this week’s deconstruction, given that the episode itself does a good job of stripping away anything interesting or remotely entertaining from the new series.
When last we left, the survivors were either holed up in the temple with Captain Sunshine and Mr. Yoko Ono or on a journey across the Island with Smokey McLocke. This episode fails, like many previous episodes have, by focusing on Kate and her bland unlawful pre-island habits.
While it was a shock back in season one that Kate was an outlaw on the run from the cops, it has become a bit of a tiresome retread come season six. It all but stops dead the gargantuan pace that the splendid opener created, leaving Cocke completely absent from the episode and instead, having to turn to the recently hard-boiled Sayid for any type of nourishment.
Much debate on the interwebs was made of Sayid’s first words from his resurrection. Many thought given his sudden change of accent he was either the reincarnation of Jacob or, perhaps, Charles Widmore (Clearly not that latter, given that actor Alan Dale is a prostitute for US network television). No, it appears poor old Naveen Andrews clocked off work early this week, reverting back to his native English accent.
Sayid apparently being infected led Jack to go on an all-out rampage of self-loathing, eventually leading him to question the medicine that The Others were trying to give Sayid to cure him. Not after they tortured Sayid first, though, in a scene that would be ironic if it wasn’t for the fact the writers were obviously watching First Blood Part II at the time. It turns out the medicine was poison and poor old Sayid has been claimed like a third-world child by an international superstar.
Elsewhere on the island; some Others did a kind demonstration on how not to act, while Jin walked around in a circle. Sawyer got all touchy feely, while Kate – clearly aiming to be hated – went to dig her claws into the recently bereaved man.
All of this, though, was a nice tidy 45 minute set-up for a cliffhanger. In the alt-verse there was nothing much to note apart from a look of familiarity between Kate and Jack. Otherwise, Kate did nothing much but kidnap Claire, meet ex-Other Ethan and stand bedside as Claire delivered Aaron. This neatly transitioned into the reveal that, not only was Claire also infected, but she returns to the show as the new Danielle Rousseau. So, next week look out for a dodgy French accent, her banging on about her lost baby and remarkably clean shaven armpits for someone who lives in the jungle.
