Rich obsessive fans of Marlon Brando are advised to get to New York right away, because there’s a once in a lifetime chance to buy some of his personal things.
More than 300 possessions belonging to Marlon Brando are up for auction at Christie’s in New York.
Brando died last summer of pulmonary fibrosis, and now the public
have the chance to bid on what amounts to "an intimate insight into the
lifestyle and career of a famed screen colossus". The auction is likely
to make up to $1 million. The Christie’s website has a full list of Marlon Brando lots, but here’s our pick of the bunch.
For $500, two pairs of Marlon Brando’s cowboy boots can be yours, or
if you’re not a boot person, the same amount of money will buy you 16
of his hats.
Of a more personal nature are his letters, including one from Martin
Luther King asking for Brando’s help, four from various Superman cast
and crew thanking him for being Superman’s Dad, and various
correspondence from Barbara Streisand, Joan Baez and Marilyn Monroe.
The centrepiece of the auction, however, are Marlon Brando’s scrips
for various movies including The Score and Apocalypse Now - including
Brando’s notes on how Colonel Kurtz relates to the Nazi bombing of
Coventry. Most impressive of all is Marlon Brando’s annotated script
for The Godfather - valued at $15,000 - covered in notes like "high
voice" and "through the nose".
The auction offers the chance for personal fans, cinema enthusiasts
and private collectors to own a small piece of movie history. Chances
are, though, that Golden Palace will buy loads of it for their swelling
collection of weird famous crap.
