Leonardo Di Caprio’s Eco Film Is Rubbish, Says Mr Greenpeace

Leonardo Di Caprio wants to save the world, and not just by shouting about being the king of the world on doomed ocean vessels, either - but poor old Leonardo keeps running into trouble no matter what he tries to do.

Take The 11th Hour, for example. The 11th Hour is Leonardo Di Caprio's completely original documentary about climate change that absolutely hasn't been influenced by An Inconvenient Truth at all, a last-minute warning for the world to change its ways before the Sun melts the ice caps killing everyone so they can't see any new films that Leonardo Di Caprio makes from his sunproof floating millionaire's aqualung. But The 11th Hour has come in for criticism from exactly the place Di Caprio didn't want - Greenpeace co-founder Dr Patrick Moore says that The 11th Hour is wrong to rant uncontrollably about deforestation because science has proved that trees are shit and there'd be more room for shops is forests weren't there.

Did we mention that Patrick Moore works for the forestry industry now?

Everything Leonardo Di Caprio ever does is done to help save the world these days. When Leonardo Di Caprio made Blood Diamond, he did so to scare people out of buying conflict diamonds with just the power of his harrowingly wayward South African accent. When Leonardo Di Caprio half-adopted a girl it was because he genuinely cares for children and wasn't just copying all his famous mates. When Leonardo Di Caprio made a film about Enron it was because, you know, corporations are evil and wrong and wear suits and stuff. And when Leonardo Di Caprio tries to charge people for his autograph, it's only so that he can… oh no, actually he just does that because he's an arse sometimes.

But that won't stop a force of nature like Leonardo Di Caprio, who also has plans to make an ecological reality TV show. But the jewel in Leonardo DiCaprio's sustainable fairtrade crown is his planet-saving documentary The 11th Hour, a documentary that looks a whole lot like An Inconvenient Truth but thankfully won't end up with a horrible concert starring Madonna. And all was going well until Patrick Moore started telling everyone that The 11th Hour was crap and that Leonardo Di Caprio was a tosser.

No, not that Patrick Moore - he only hates women these days - but Patrick Moore the co-founder of Greenpeace. In an article published in the Vancouver Sun entitled An Inconvenient Fact, Patrick Moore lays into Leonardo Di Caprio's new movie for trying to stop deforestation, because of something about carbon that we don't really understand. The Los Angeles Times reports:

He writes that trees are powerful carbon concentrators and when a tree rots and dies, the carbon it has absorbed is released back into the atmosphere. In contrast, Moore writes, furniture made from trees hundreds of years ago still holds its carbon. "Rather than cutting fewer trees and using less wood, DiCaprio and [long-time activist Tzeporah] Berman ought to promote the growth of more trees and the use of more wood," Moore wrote. "There is a misconception that cutting down an old tree will result in a net release of carbon… Berman, a veteran of the forestry protest movement, should by now have learned that young forests outperform old growth in carbon sequestration."

It might be worth pointing out that Dr Patrick Moore is now an ex-member of Greenpeace and now works as a consultant to the forestry industry. Which either means he knows what he's talking about or he's fiercely protecting his own interests. Either way, we don't really care who's right or wrong in this argument - we learnt all we need to know about the environment from that song Razorlight recorded in a dark shed.
