Howard Stern and Lena Dunham have kissed and made up. Not literally, but they did resolve their tabloid-sensationalized feud in a shockingly adult way … they spoke directly to each other. What a revolutionary tactic!
In reality, it was never truly a feud at all. Howard critcized Lena’s show, HBO’s “Girls,” and said a few unkind things about Lena’s physique on his radio show, calling her a “little fat chick” and comparing her appearance to Jonah Hill’s (when, with her short hair, she clearly resembles a cross between a grossly out-of-shape Mary Lou Retton and my friend’s ex-wife).
According to Howard:
“I learned that this little fat chick writes the show and directs the show, and that makes sense to me because she’s such a camera hog that the other characters barely are on.”
Then, Howard watched more episodes of the show, changed his opinion (about the show, not necessarily about the Jonah Hill part), apologized on the air, and invited Lena to appear on his show to discuss it. Lena agreed, they talked it out, and she accepted Howard’s apology. And that’s that.
Howard admitted that he had made his initial comments about “Girls” after watching only two episodes. After watching the remainder of the first season, he completely changed his opinion.
“I’ve done a whole 360 on the show and I really admire the girl who writes it, and I actually like when she comes on camera … I’m a superfan now.”
He also tweeted:
“Let’s clear this up. I love the show Girls and the star of the show. Yes, she’s heavy but you should see the roll of jello on my belly.”
In reality, two episodes of a show is very often enough to judge. Sometimes two minutes of one episode is enough. It’s a shame that Howard was such a dick about it, but whatever … “Girls” can be funny, but it can also be very grating. And to be fair, she is pretty chubby. And she’s naked a lot.
To her credit, throughout the entire mess, Lena was extremely gracious. On Wednesday, she called into Howard’s radio show and allowed him to passionately kiss her ass.
“I’m in love with you and your character. … It’s not about apologising, although I want to say I’m a fan of yours. … I love you and I think you’re terrific.”
Lena accepted Howard’s fawning, but did defend her weight.
“I’m not that fat, Howard. … I don’t mean to take major issue with you about this. I’m not super thin, but I’m thin for, like, Detroit.”
And with his characteristic diplomacy, Stern agreed, saying:
“You’re not obese or anything.”
Once again proving the authenticity of her viewpoint, it is true … Lena Dunham would be a hardcore sex bomb in Detroit. But aren’t we all? She’s a little bit pretentious, a little bit weird, but her show is truly amazing and Howard did have a dead-on point when he said:
“Good for her … it’s hard for little fat chicks to get anything goin’.”
