Kevin Spacey Superman Returns Man Of SteelKevin Spacey - obviously very happy with his work in Superman Returns, officially the best summer blockbuster in which a bland-looking caped man lifts up an island and nothing much else happens - has announced that he intends to reprise the role.

Superman: Man Of Steel is all set to hit cinemas in 2009, roughly about the same time that Eli Roth will be churning out Hostel Part 17 and Oliver Stone will have unveiled Pool Of Fury, his controversial seven-hour long Michael Barrymore biopic.

Rumours that someone, somewhere on the planet is actually looking forward to Superman: Man Of Steel remain wholly unsubstantiated.

Of course, this 'in-production' natter is all speculation. The more comic-literary among you will be aware of the much feted 'curse of Superman', so chances are - by the time you read this - the whole project could have gone tits up, what with lead actor Brandon Routh being horrifically maimed in a freak snooker accident and Kate Bosworth retiring from Hollywood to go and work in the Whitby branch of Poundstretcher. Actually, though, that might not be a wise career move - we're sure the bargain buckets overflowing with £2.99 DVDs of the first movie would prove a haunting reminder of the life she left behind.

Hollywood publication Variety broke the news, announcing that Kevin Spacey had been in meetings with director Bryan Singer, who is also set to grab the camera-reins once more. Whether they can do a decent job of things this time around does, admittedly, remain to be seen … although hecklerspray has a sneaking suspicion that the upcoming Batman sequel may well make every other superhero flick look like a pointless mess in comparison. Although Spiderman 3 did manage a pretty good job of looking like a pointless mess anyway.

Yet - despite all this - Spacey's starring roles could be getting more sporadic in the future. He yakked thus:

"I love movies and will continue to make movies when I can, [but] my priorities have changed. Theatre is the number one thing in my life."

Still. Maybe Kev could combine his job as artistic director of the Old Vic with his Superman-based leanings - possibly a piece of interpretative theatre based on that rubbish N64 game in which Superman flew through some yellow hoops and did nothing else.

It'd have more plot than the last movie, anyway.

Nooooo! They arsed the last one right up. Curse of Superman? Curse of the bloody kid more like. Honestly, children are crap in action films unless they’re being rescued then get shoved off camera immediately. Remember Ghostbusters 2?

And as for the leads… straight out of American Teen Drama #642. Bosworth looks hardly old enough to open an alcopop let alone be a respected high flying journo AND mother an irritating passion killer (that’s my passion, by the way. For the film, I mean.) Brandon who? I’ve drawn a blank here. Much like his face.

Although it can all be rescued if Kevin Spacey kills the kid in the opening sequence. Lex Luther? No, I said Kevin Spacey.

Apologies for the rant, it’s Monday.
