When you think of films about disabled medical students who touch magical hammers and become crime-fighting Norse gods, the first name that springs to mind is obviously Kenneth Branagh.
Isn’t it? It isn’t? In fact Kenneth Branagh would probably be one of the last people you’d associate with something that brawny and gormless? Well tell that to Marvel, because they’re currently in talks with Kenneth Branagh about their new Thor movie. In short, Kenneth Branagh wants to direct Thor.
Kenneth Branagh directing a summertime comic book movie like Thor might sound slightly ridiculous, but the idea has potential – with any luck Branagh will turn Thor into a cross between his modern-day romantic musical interpretation of Love’s Labour Lost and that Frankenstein movie where he made Robert De Niro dress up like Sloth from The Goonies and run around the north pole. Ace!
You know what? We’re really starting to dislike Christopher Nolan. Comic book movies used to be so simple – there’d be a superhero and he’d punch all the baddies and then fly around the world backwards to reverse time and that’d be the end. But then Christopher bloody Nolan had to come along and make everything clever. Thanks a lot, Nolan.
Now that Christopher Nolan has managed to make The Dark Knight both intelligent and massive profitable, everyone’s clamouring to get highbrow arthouse directors to helm their comic book movies. And the logical conclusion of that is Kenneth Branagh directing a comic book movie about a Norse God who looks like a fan fiction version of an Iron Maiden music video and runs around New York with a massive hammer, getting magical powers by eating golden apples.
Which, somewhat bewilderingly, is probably going to happen. Before Marvel can make its long-awaited Avengers movie – starring Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, possibly Will Smith as Captain America and whoever Edward Norton’s less stroppy Incredible Hulk replacement is – it needs to make a Thor film.
And who better to do it than Kenneth Branagh, the man responsible for directing five Shakespeare adaptations, something about a magical flute and a remake of Sleuth that somehow made people hate Jude Law even more than they already did, even though they didn’t think it was physically possible. Variety reports:
Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct “Thor,” the next Marvel Comics property that will be turned into a live-action film by Marvel Studios. Pic will be released in 2010. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige‘s choice of Branagh is surprising, as Branagh hasn’t really directed an action-heavy film since his debut on “Henry V,” a bloody telling of the British king’s conquest of France.
Now the easiest thing to do here is knee-jerk, since Kenneth Branagh is mainly known for making mimsying wordy films for English literature teachers and Thor sounds pretty much like it might just be the most berserk film ever made.
But let’s give this idea a chance. After all, if Kenneth Branagh can bring some of the fire and intensity of his acting to Thor, and then add some of the highbrow thoughtfulness of his previously-directed movies, the film could be a winner. And, who knows, it might even inspire some other intellectual movie directors to try their hand at more shamelessly commercial fare.
Whatever next? Ang Lee making an Incredible Hulk movie? Aha hahaha ha.
Oh.

Sorry, you must be referring to all the people living inside your head.

Not only do I think Branagh could do a great job with a Thor movie, I also think he himself would make a fantastic Loki, and he could get Brian Blessed to play Odin, so it’s winner, winner, chicken dinner!

‘made people hate Jude Law even more than they already did’???
What are you talking about? Oh, yes, I see, people like you who should never even try to watch a master piece like ‘Sleuth’.
Stuart Heritage says
Oh yes, Sleuth. As The Guardian said:
“A Dead Film Walking, a zombie of a film, a shuffling Frankenstein’s monster of a film, leaking electricity from its badly-fitting neck bolts, tragically whimpering at the pointless agony of its own brief existence.”
bagger says
Stuart Heritage, oh yes, I ALWAYS let The Guardian and other rags do my thinking and form my opinions for me.
Go for it, Branaugh!

This pointless, and bafflingly petty, little rant made you look like quite an idiot Mr.Heritage.

It helps if the director and scriptwriter actually READ the comic books. Jon Favreau did a good job with Iron Man because he knew the story and understood the character. Ang Lee was a great director for every other movie he’s done but just had no clue on the Hulk. Thor will probably require two actors – you can’t CGI Thor and I dont think the same guy can play Donald Blake. Getting someone to deliver Thor’s lines and not sound corny will be a tough casting challenge — like Ricardo Montalban in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, he was one of the few actors who could do those lines without sounding cheesy.

Have you not seen Hamlet? Dead Again? Branagh’s a master. I’ll gladly see Thor. It’s not like he’s doing some unnecessary and [retarded] adaptation of Superman (I’m looking at you, Bryan Singer). I don’t see how KB doing Thor could be a bad thing.
RyanSquid says
Are you kidding me? Kenneth Branagh is a master of the period piece genre – of which Thor is HEAVILY rooted in, and I’m sure will be a large part of the film. There’s no doubt that having an accomplished thespian/actor/director will show big time – think of the way the dialogue will be delivered now because of Branagh. I guarantee that “verily thou hast” shit will be 50% less cheesy.
You sir, no nothing of what you speak of.

TO THIS I SAY HELL YES!!

Stuart heritage, quit yer bawwwwing!
pmrl says
Maybe I’m crazy but from a purely physical likeness pov wouldn’t HHH be the perfect Thor?
max says
Was the comment about Frankenstein “running around the north pole” supposed to be a dig at Branagh’s adaptation? This whole article seemed way too sarcastic to make a point.

Besides giving their friends and classmates little cards, parents also usually get their children some special present that they will enjoy. Presselite an overseas web and phone application company released Nude It first overseas and it is only now making its way to America. and if you’re switching to either of those platforms, you may be able to download new copies of your Astraware games thanks to their guarantee.
