When rappers make movies, the results are always entertaining. Whether it’s Eminem and 50 Cent basically playing versions of themselves or Ice-T playing an enormous mutant kangaroo, we love it.
But Kanye West making a movie? We’re not so sure that’d work. After all, Kanye has an ego so huge that we have a slight feeling that a Kanye West movie would just consist of two hours of Kanye’s giant, unsmiling face staring into a camera for the audience to bow down and worship. But that’s something we’ll have to see for ourselves – because Kanye West is making a movie.
Kanye West (CDs) isn’t a man who shies away from big issues. He is, after all, the man who immediately followed annoying 50 Cent with his "George Bush doesn’t care about black people," line by dressing up as Jesus
for the cover of a magazine. So the announcement that Kanye West is to
start delving into the world of movies is kind of exciting.
Kanye West has teamed up with New Line Cinema and Anonymous Content
to make a film inspired by his music. ABC reports the Kanye West movie as being:
A
multi-perspective look at life in America through the eyes of West and
various writers and directors. The untitled project will "synthesise
(West’s) vision with a
fantastic group of filmmakers to create what will be a one-of-a-kind
film experience," said producer Richard Brown.
Which suggests that we’re not going to be in for another dreary, community-outraging
‘thugz with guns’ marathon like 50 Cent’s Get Rich Or Die Tryin’. And
that’s a good thing. But Kanye West needs to know that he will never be able to
match the perfect movie/ music synergy accomplished by Will Smith when he
uttered the immortal line, "Tonight we’re gonna party like it’s… hold
up, it is!" in his Willenium single.
