John Peel Day, CDs, Concerts, Coming Next Month
Then buzz it up

You don’t need telling what a legend John Peel was - if you didn’t already know, there are thousands of other places where you can be told.
To mark the anniversary of his death, the BBC is holding the inaugural John Peel Day next month. And it’s already sounding pretty special…
John Peel Day takes place on Thursday October 13th, and more than
300 concerts around the world will be dedicated to him. The day before
that, a special tribute gig will take place the day before at the Queen
Elizabeth Hall in London. New Order are headlining, with support from
Super Furry Animals and The Fall, among others. Highlights will be
broadcast during a mammoth seven-hour broadcast on Radio 1 the
following night.
In addition, Jeff Beck, Peter Hook and The Futureheads are to record
a cover version of The Buzzcocks‘ Ever Fallen In Love and release it as
a tribute single. And then there’s the tribute album…
A 40-track compilation CD will be released on October 17th,
featuring long-time John Peel favourites including (deep breath) Lonnie
Donegan, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Fairport Convention, The Ramones,
New Order, The Undertones, Blur, The Fall, PJ Harvey and Belle &
Sebastian. A portion of profits will go to The Salvation Army, East
Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and The Kariandusi School Trust.
Wonder if there’ll ever be a Chris Moyles day?
