Usually when a film is announced, you have a pretty good idea about whether the film is going to be brilliant or cack. For instance, The Brazilian Job: cack. Clerks 2: The Passion Of The Clerks: brilliant. Probably.
But sometimes a film is announced that you just know could go either way – it could be the greatest movie ever made or the biggest stinker ever seen. Which is why we don’t know what to make of the news that Tim Burton is going to direct Jim Carrey in a movie about Robert Ripley of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not fame.
Tim Burton (DVDs) is set to direct a biopic of Robert Ripley; the artist,
explorer, author, broadcaster and anthropologist who became famous for
his Believe It Or Not cartoons which detailed all kinds of outlandish
weirdo nonsense that he’d collected or found out about. Jim Carrey has
signed to star as Robert Ripley.
The biopic will be written by Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander,
who have written Jim Carrey film Man On The Moon and Tim Burton film Ed
Wood. According to Empire Online:
The film follows Ripley as he’s becoming world famous for his newspaper
column, which charts his adventures discovering the world’s weirdest
creatures, objects and people. But in true Hollywood style, it’ll see
him learning a lesson that his subjects – particularly the people – are
more than just curios for his collection.
Tim
Burton and Jim Carrey will begin filming the Robert Ripley biopic next
year for a late 2007 release. But we’re just not sure how it’s going to
turn out.
On the one hand, the film might hit the understated heights of Ed
Wood or Man On The Moon, but on the other hand it might go completely
the other way. After all, it’s a film starring Ace Ventura about a
crappy TV show presented by the bloke who used to be Superman, directed
by the man who was responsible for the Planet Of The Apes remake. And
even the writers can’t be let off the hook: Agent Cody Banks? Their fault.
Tell us what you think – will the Jim Carrey/Tim Burton/Robert
Ripley movie be really good or a lot of balls? And don’t tell us to
wait until the film comes out in 2007 – we’re busy people and we don’t
have time to wait. Leave your comments below.

Carrey And Burton Believe – Empire Online
[story by Stuart Heritage]
Kara says
I think it will be one of the greatest movies ever in my book.
My favorite actor and my favorite director/producer.
I also think that last paragraph was a little insulting, yes?

If it’s done the right way it will be amazing.
I’m a supervisor for the Ripley’s museum in San Antonio, Texas. There are so many incredible stories, events, and people in the Ripley archive it’s insane, not to mention how interesting and odd Ripley himself was.
I think Tim Burton will create the right atmosphere for this eccentric man’s life story.
Can’t wait to see it!
