The Dutch get all the fun. Not content with having better footballers than us, a prettier capital city than us and, um, a funnier accent than us, they’ve also gone and made a far more exciting series of Big Brother than we ever could have.
Where viewers of the British Big Brother have to be content with watching all kinds of shrieking gonks washing themselves in dustbins in a desperate attempt to be controversial and entertaining, this series of Dutch Big Brother has taken a step further and actually featured a housemate giving birth.
Dutch TV sounds brilliant. This week alone a man snorted a load of
cocaine on a TV show called Shoot Up And Swallow, and then got
interviewed on the effects while he was off his mash. You don’t get that kind
of thing on Monarch Of The Glen, that’s for sure.
And now, the Dutch series of Big Brother has excelled itself by
showing a housemate giving birth. Baby Joscelyn Savanna popped out of
her Mum Tanja yesterday afternoon, and the birth was shown on TV eight
hours later – after Big Brother producers consulted with authorities.
Cameras reportedly stayed on the Mother’s face throughout
labour.
Not that this whole ‘giving birth’ thing was a surprise to anyone, though.
Tanja was heavily when she entered the Big Brother house in
August, and the birth was always anticipated. At the start of the series, the show’s production company – Talpa – was roundly criticised for allowing a contestant onto Big Brother in such a state.
Special government rules
have apparently been set up about the birth. Tanja had to have the baby
in a special room in the Big Brother house; Joscelyn Savanna must only
be filmed for a total of eight hours between now and the end of the series, and
she will stay in a special room where she can be visited by Tanja and
other relatives.
Strange, really – in Holland, Big Brother housemates cause controversy by pushing things out
of their bodies, but housemates over have the same effect by pushing things into their bodies. Isn’t that right, Kinga?
