When I heard that One Direction was splitting up so they could all work on their solo projects, all I could think was “lol k, because we all know how well that went for every guy from a boy band other than Justin Timberlake.” But those handsome bastards ALL proved me wrong!
In 2017, you could not turn on pop radio without hearing one of the guys from One Direction and they ALL had hits! I reeeealllly just thought it was going to be Zayn Malik because he left the group first, but boy was I wrong!
First, let’s look at Zayn. 2017 was a good year for him because he had several hits, including that duet with Taylor Swift. He’s still dating the super sexy Gigi Hadid and they were even featured on the cover of Vogue together. Huge.
Harry Styles was a member of the ensemble cast of Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed and wildly successful film Dunkirk, which has just been nominated for a ton of Golden Globes. There’s a good chance the film will be nominated for Best Ensemble Performance at the Screen Actor’s Guild awards, meaning Harry could take home a SAG! He also released his own successful album with the hit song “Sign of the Times” and performed on Saturday Night Live and at this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. That’s one amazing year!
Niall Horan had potentially the best hit out of all the guys because he released the JAM “Slow Hands” which has been on the radio every 30 seconds for the last six months and I am NOT mad at it because that song is fire and never gets old.
Liam Payne had a baby with the super sexy Cheryl Cole and had his own hit song “Strip That Down”, a song that I fucking hated but it got a TON of radio play so it’s still really good for him.
Finally, there’s Louis Tomilson, who, SHOCKER, had a hit song this year with Bebe Rexha called “Back to You.” Honest to fucking God, there have been MULTIPLE days this past year where I could flip through every single damn pop music radio station and the ONLY songs playing were ones by dudes that used to be in One Direction. While this was occasionally annoying for me, I can totally appreciate 2017 being the year that the guys from One Direction did something no other boy band has done: all having at least moderately successful solo careers.
