Stop me if you’ve heard this one, but it turns out that a super powerful famous guy has SHOCKINGLY been using his influence to coerce women into sexual acts, all while harassing and assaulting them on the side without EVER getting in shit for it. I could typically insert like 50 names here, but right now I’m talking about Harvey Weinstein.
Harvey and his brother, Bob, have headed up the megaforce Weinstein company for years and have made some MAJOR movies that have won numerous Oscars and launched who even knows how many careers. However, it has recently come to light that during his time as a studio big wig, Harvey has been a disgusting piece of shit to women.
For years, Rose McGowan has been ranting about the disgustingly sexist nature of the Hollywood machine and claimed that years ago she was raped by a major studio exec, but because it was early in her career she felt forced to keep her mouth shut and eventually received a private settlement for the whole thing.
Now, thanks to The New York Times sting operation (they’d heard rumours about Weinstein for years and decided to finally investigate), we now know that that major studio exec was Harvey Weinstein. But it’s not just Rose McGowan calling out Harvey Weinstein for harassment and assault. Nope, even big names, like Angelina fucking Jolie, are finally calling this douche bag out, and now, in the words of Bella Hadid, homebody is gonna like get it (it being the long, hard dick of the law).
In the new expose on Harvey, Ashley Judd, Mira Sorvino, Rosanna Arquette, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Angelina Jolie (just to name a few) all share similar stories about how Harvey made unwanted sexual advances towards them and did not handle rejection very well. Actress Asia Argento went even further, stating that Harvey forcibly performed oral sex on her when she was just 20 years old. She was terrified because, like so many other young women in the industry, she knew he’d crushed a lot of people and careers before.
There had apparently been rumours about Harvey Weinstein’s behaviour going around for years, but a lot of the long time big stars never really heard much about it, however, now that everyone is in the know, everyone from Meryl Streep to George Clooney to Judi Dench is calling Harvey’s ass out.
I’m sure a lot of these people really had no idea how bad this guy really was and most people seem to feel pretty shitty that they were working with him while he was abusing young women behind closed doors.
Surprisingly, I think Kevin Smith’s tweet about the whole thing sums up best how I assume a lot of Hollywood is feeling right now (or how I hope they’re feeling, because I’m an optimistic person):
“He financed the first 14 years of my career — and now I know while I was profiting, other were in terrible pain. It makes me feel ashamed.”
