Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince - Eight Days To Go

July 8th, 2005 at 13:30 by Stuart Heritage

Potter_boxset_2In just over a week, the children of the world - and the creepiest percentage of adults - will rush out to their nearest book shop and grab a copy of Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince.

The penultimate edition of the series, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince comes out on July 16th - and the American publishers, Scholastic, are in trouble for not using recycled paper for the new Harry Potter book.

American Harry Potter fans are being urged to go to Canada to buy
their copy of Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince because Raincoast
Book, the Canadian publishers, are printing the book entirely on
recycled paper
. According to Markets Initiative, a Vancouver-based
conservation group, Scholastic rejected the chance to use recycled
paper for the book.

Environmentally sound or not, when Harry Potter And The Half-Blood
Prince
is released on July 16th, it’s likely to be the fastest-selling
book of all time. The countdown clocks are in place at the book shops,
security measures are in place so that nobody tries to steal and read
the book, and J.K. Rowling has prepared a million-strong army of winged
monkeys to do evil for her.

The moment the book is published, J.K. "I think love is a kind of
magic"
Rowling
will abseil from a helicopter through a glass ceiling
into Edinburgh Castle, where she will read a passage of the book to
some specially-chosen children and, via a satellite link, the whole
world.

The publishers are still trying to protect all the secrets held
within the book, but it might not be working. Bookies are still giving
the best odds on Dumbledore dying at some point in the new book, after
an unusually large number of bets were placed from a town where the book is being
printed. However, the Potter fans say this is unlikely.

So who is right - the bookies or the fans? Does Dumbledore bite the
dust or not? Do you even care? After all, it’s just a story about a
wizard - do you really think it’ll change your life? Will you spend a
needless amount of money on the book, read it in a day and never look
at it again? What’s the point? Ooh, a talking owl, very clever. Leave
your comments below.

I have the first 5 Harry Potter books from Canada. I bought a 5 pack last year when I was in Winnipeg. The first three were printed in Canada and the last two were printed in England. The Canadian versions are printed on a grade of newsprint that is better than your typical newsletter but not much better. The British versions are printed on a nicer paper but still not as nice as the US editions, which are bigger, on better paper, with better printing and nicely illustrated. The 4th(UK) book had a bad binding and the 5th (UK) book has a page that wasn’t glued in at all. Just minor problems but they detract from the book. This year i am buying the US and English versions. We’ll see what they look like.
