Friends Of The ‘Spray – Best DVD Of 2005
Take our tiny survey to help improve hecklerspray in 2006!
Earlier today, the fearless hecklerspray writers put their necks on the line to present to you their list of the best DVDs of 2005.
But, despite what you probably think, hecklerspray is not the entire world. So what did the effortlessly cool and smart and influential friends of hecklerspray – friends such as Ladyfuzz, Oppenheimer, Devin Davis, The Like, Jennifer Gentle and Mother And The Addicts – pick as their choice DVDs of the year?
You really want to know, don’t you…
Liz, Ladyfuzz
Oh my God, I’m gonna say something really scary.
I just watched this film called Notebook (DVDs) an hour ago. My flatmate hired
it and I was not really up for it but then we just sat there in bed
crying our eyes out. It’s not the sort of thing I’d normally give my
marks to as a quality film, but this one is just real amazing
unpretentious "wish it could be like that" love story with a great
ending. What can I say! Don’t judge me by it (oh this might not be
anything new for this year though… so I have to add)… The Mighty
Boosh! I’m not big on comedy, but this one will keep you quoting it for a long time.
Jennifer Gentle:
Alessio: Federico Fellini’s (DVDs) 8 1/2, La Dolce Vita,
Giulietta Degli Spiriti… should I say more??! The new editions of
these movies are just perfect.
Marco: I bought a DVD in Brussels called Experiments In
Terror: it’s a collection of experimental short movies from the Sixties
to the Nineties. Dreamy, morbid atmospheres and visually compelling, I
really liked especially the one made by San Franciscan video artist JX
Williams and for a very strange twist of fate we met him in person when
we played in Frisco!
Marco, Sillyboy Entertainment
I bought lots of DVDs and finally I had a
chance to grab the new version of The Wicker Man (DVDs): this movie has never
been released in Italy, it was a kind of legendary holy grail and I’m
glad to say that it didn’t let me disappointed. Great movie and
fantastic soundtrack too! And I love that AC/DC DVD called Family
Jewels – it’s gross, but it’s fun!
Z Berg, The Like
Trapped In The Closet – The Videos. You have to see it to believe it.
Devin Davis
No Direction Home (the Scorsese/Dylan documentary).
Finally get to see those old performances in their full glory. I
include this in the DVD category rather than the movie category because
the inclusion of the full length performance of Hey Mr. Tambourine Man
in the DVD extras is one of the coolest things I’ve seen all year. Many
times in music docs you are robbed of full song performances in lieu of
voice over narration or editing. The movie is outstanding however… I
had never really known to what extent he was bastardised during his
electrification phase – the boos and taunts – the fact that he and The Hawks plowed on ahead through this is very inspiring.
Sam Smith, Mother And The Addicts
Dr Feelgood Going Back Home
(DVDs). Released at the start of this year. A homecoming gig by one of
my favourite groups and, heck, they were good and what’s more kept it
nice and straightforward, which is something I’m not very good at. My
Pops got me Wilco Johnson’s autograph the other week. Rock on Pops.
Oppenheimer:
Shaun: Sin City (DVDs) – looks unlike anything that has
gone before. Watching Frank Miller on the DVD extras is a hoot as he
looks like a wee kid in a candy store who can’t believe that it’s all
happening.
Rocky: Mates Of State: Two of Us (DVDs). A really beautiful
look at one of my favourite bands recording one of my favourite albums.
Perfect.
That’s them: now you. What DVDs have tickled your fancy in 2005. Comments. Below. Now.
