Scary films about aeroplanes are the new black.
First there was Red Eye, about an aeroplane passenger worried that a bad man will kill her Dad. And now there is Flightplan, about an aeroplane passenger worried that a bad man will kill her daughter. And it’s topped the US weekend box office chart.
Flightplan – where Jodie Foster (DVDs) plays a mother trying to protect her
daughter on a danger-laden plane, beat the new Tim Burton/Johnny
Depp/Helena Bonham-Carter love-in The Corpse Bride to the top spot, but
the success of all of the films released this week boosted box office
takings by 51% over last year. Here’s the top ten…
1 - Flightplan (Wait, isn’t this just Panic Room on a plane?) $24,646,000
2 - Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (A man falls in love with a dead woman. We’ve heard this story before somewhere) $20,130,000
3 - Just Like Heaven (A man falls in love with a dead… hey!) $9,800,000
4 - Roll Bounce (The Shindler’s List of goofy rollerdisco flicks) $8,000,000
5 - The Exorcism Of Emily Rose (Like a typical small claims court case, but with more screaming and bleeding eyes) $7,500,000
6 - Lord Of War (The producers had to notify NATO before one scene
was filmed, in case satellites thought a real army was mobilising itself
for war) $4,900,000
7 - The 40-Year-Old-Virgin (The film with the best pretend Polyphonic Spree ending in this week’s top ten) $4,272,000
8 - The Constant Gardener (If you were a constant gardener, this
would be the week to think about ordering spring-flowering bulbs)
$2,244,000
9 - Transporter 2 (Amazingly not Jason Statham‘s worst film this month) $2,150,000
10 – Cry Wolf (A film about a lovely sad wolf) $2,102,000
