Everybody Is Wrong: Peter Kay
Then buzz it up
July 20th, 2005 at 16:30 by C J Davies
We’re a contrary bunch at hecklerspray headquarters. That’s why we stamped and patented Everybody Is Wrong - a weekly bilefest in which we take a movie/band/album/celebrity deemed to be hot property by the mewling masses and fling monkey poo in their faces.
This week, we’ve turned our sinister gaze towards rotund ‘funnyman’ and ‘national treasure’ Peter Kay.
Let’s get one thing straight - Kay wasn’t always the humourless oaf he is these days. Anyone who rejoiced in the hilarity of That Peter Kay Thing and Phoenix Nights will be able to attest - Kay was once a genuinely exciting comedy presence. No Lenny Bruce, sure, but a sharp writer capable of raising a chuckle nonetheless.
Then something happened. Let’s call it Nathan Barley syndrome.
For Kay it came in the form of Max And Paddy’s Road To Nowhere. And in the form of lazy, lowest common-denominator stand-up tours in which bellowing a bunch of tired old catchphrases to an audience of drunken Shellsuited morons (no doubt fresh from a lager-swilling stint at their local Wetherspoons) apparently passed for ‘comedy’.
And don’t even get us started on that Comic Relief single.
To put things bluntly: Peter Kay has simply stopped trying. He doesn’t need to. All he has to do to make money these days is pull a funny face and shout "Garlic Bread?" and the proles are pissing themselves. He’s a one-man Little Britain - creatively devoid, but - hey - what a funny accent you’re doing!
Gone is the surreal genius of Kay’s Fire Chief analysing the lyrics to Disco Inferno ("’Burn that mother down”. See that? Another child orphaned."). Gone is the amusement factor of an ice-cream man having a nervous breakdown then relocating his business to a porn shop.
All we have now is a broken record, a bunch of whooping monkeys applauding his every gesture.
And Christ. Did you see Kay’s Live 8 debacle? hecklerspray is still having nightmares. But then go and put a Bill Hicks CD on, and everything seems better.

u r just picking a fight and i have got max and pady and it is pure dynamite. I am not 1 2 go with the crowd but this is an exception. U r probably just a grumpy git who wouldn’t know comedy if it hit him in the face

I think this wins the award for the most incorrect site on the net.
Peter Kay is a legend.
Oh yeah, if anyone’s wondering why I think this site is so bad, just look at what they named comedy movie of the year.
Pillocks………
“Go and put on a Bill Hicks CD.” HTF is Bill Hicks?????
“No Lenny Bruce” Again, HTF is he?
I can tell this is an American made site.

Knight Rider, this is a London based site. Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks are two of the finest stand up comedians ever. I suggest you check some of their work out.
It’s perhaps unfair to compare them to Peter Kay however as they are completely different kinds of comedians.

Did santa not bring you what you asked for at christmas? is that why you seem all bitter and twisted? Having a go at peter kay seems like your looking for a reaction out of people, Theres no truth in anything you have just stated, After watching Peter Kay grow from local funny man to britain number one comedian - reaching out to people all over the UK rather than just the people of the north west. We should enjoy Peter for his wonderful talent rather than have a go at him because hes become a sucess!

I think your the one who Pans out some of the same old tripe, so your a member of the i can’t like this cos its mainstream now brigade so i’ll slate it instead. The main reason a lot of his routine is not new is for the fact he is in the process of taking a break from stand up to concentrate on family life(something you may never know after spending most of your time jacking off to the peep show et al).
So heed your own advice and learn something new than slate someone cos he is famous.

Is this site run by southerners? It would certainly excuse the lack of intelligence, the general twattishness and the sperm covered life size sex model of Ricky Gervais that stands in the corner.
Bless you.

Peter Kay is a comedy legend! He’s the funniest thing to come from Britain since Monty Python. You should take another chance to watch Max and Paddys Road to Nowhere and you should give a second opinion. Just think about the sequence in the jail with Raymond the Bastard paralelling the 3 sisters in “the Shawshank Redemption.” As well as Willy Wanker and the Chocolate Factory!
“It’ll be you and me together Max! But not in a Gay Way!”
I urge you to try watching it again!
Shabba!

He used to be a comedic legend and if he’d retired at the height of his fame like Ronnie Barker did he would’ve remained so. But no, he just keeps bringing out the same stand-up show on DVD in a different location each year. The same thing, almost word-for-word.
He really does just seem tired. His humour was always very observational and I suppose when you stop being a normal person with a day-job and a normal life; you just run out of material.
He needs to either disappear forever or take a break and come back with something fresh and dynamite. Otherwise he’s just gonna be another boring, murky hack who used to shine brightly.
