Eurovision’s changed, and not in a good way.
Back in it’s golden era, you could watch bands with ridiculous facial hair sing songs called things like ‘Bingy Bongy Boo’. And it didn’t matter who won. So long as it wasn’t the French.
Nowadays, it’s all about sex and business. For a while, Britain was honestly thinking about entering Jordan (books) – the shrieking pikey queen – as our entry.
Now we’ve got Javine (CDs) – someone not even good enough to be in Girl’s Aloud (CDs) – singing the frankly dangerous sounding Touch My Fire. Rejected titles for the song were said to include Run With My Scissors and Put Your Hand In My Kitchen Sink Waste Removal Unit.
But our woes are nothing compared to the scandal that’s hit the German entrant.
Gracia Baur is defending herself against protests that she should withdraw, after it emerged that her producer bought 2000 copies of her single Run And Hide to qualify it for the competition.
Gracia was a German Pop Idol finallist famous for her gay ex-boyfriend and her clothes that would burst open by themselves, so obviously she’d get the hecklerspray vote.
She would, at least, until we found out the name of the Swiss entrant.
Go Vanilla Ninja!
