The life of a TV star is a hard one. While moviestars are regularly chased down streets by swarms of hormone-crazed fans, the nearest thing to recognition most TV stars get is when an old lady at a bus stop says things like "You’re him, aren’t you? Thing. Off the advert".
However, next month the TV stars will get their time in the spotlight. The Emmy Awards are the TV Oscars, where endless trophies are handed out in a great big celebration of TV smugness. And where there’s an awards ceremony, there’s an opportunity to make money from it.
Until the ceremony takes place on September 18th, we’ll be profiling the betting odds of the nominees in some of the biggest Emmy categories. And today, with the help of the good ship Betfair.com, we’re finishing our look at the actors up for the Best Comedy Actor award…
Ray Romano - Ray plays Raymond in Everybody Loves Raymond. Everybody
Loves Raymond is a strange sitcom - it’s possibly the single most
depressing show on TV. It’s basically about a family who all openly
hate each other and argue all the time. And not in a funny way, either.
In a nasty, spiteful way. And it’s made Romano the highest-ever paid TV
star. The show came to an end this year, so we’re expecting the show to
take a few tearful Emmys. But for best actor? We’re not so sure.
Current odds - 8/5
Jason Bateman - Jason plays Michael in Arrested Development. It’s
hard to try and talk about Arrested Development without zithering off
into endless graceless sycophancy. It genuinely rivals Curb Your
Enthusiasm as the best comedy currently around. But where CYE revels in
it’s improvised elasticity, Arrested Development is the exact opposite.
There’s so much crammed into each episode that you’ll miss about 12
important plot points if you so much as sneeze. And Jason Bateman is
the glue that holds it all together. Current odds - 7/5
And in case you missed yesterday’s instalment, the odds for the other nominees in this category are as follows:
Zach Braff - 7/1
Eric McCormack - 33/5
Tony Shalhoub - 4/1
Tomorrow we’ll begin to look at the Best Comedy Actress nominees. In the mean time, head over to the General Special Bets section of
Betfair.com to see all the nominees in all six featured categories. And
get betting. You get free stuff when you join, look…
