The Emmys are sometimes known as the TV Oscars - win an Emmy and you know that your TV show is a great big success. The 2005 Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on September 18th, and we’ll be helping you bet on the right contenders in the run-up.
Of course, we won’t be giving you betting odds on all the categories. It’s an American awards ceremony, so it must - presumably by law - feature all kinds of awards that nobody gives a flying nun about. So, if you’re interested in finding the odds for the Outstanding Hairstyling In A Movie, Miniseries Or Special category, this won’t be you.
Instead, we’re going to check out the odds for the six main categories: Best Comedy Actor, Best Comedy Actress, Best Comedy Show, Best Drama Actor, Best Drama Actress and Best Drama Show. And we’ll start at the very beginning.
So here is part one of our Best Comedy Actor betting odds rundown, from hecklerspray and Betfair.com…
Zach Braff - Zack plays JD, the lead character in Scrubs, the
quirky-like-Ally-McBeal-but-actually-funny hospital sitcom. He’s also
the star of not-quite-as-good-as-we-expected movie Garden State.
Rumours abound that Zach’s a big film star now, so he’ll be leaving
Scrubs sometime soon. It’s a shame - in Scrubs, Braff is funny and
charming, but usually manages to avoid being weighed down in the cloggy
sentiment that the writers seem to love pumping the show full of. Current odds - 25/4
Eric McCormack - Eric plays Will in Will And Grace, the funny-when-it’s-on-first-thing-in-the-morning sitcom. He’s already won
this award once, in 2001, and this might be the last time he’s
nominated. The new season of Will And Grace will be the last, and Eric
is said to be planning to star in and direct a romantic comedy he’s
written. He’s probably trying to prove that he can play roles other than
irritating, self-absorbed fools. Current odds - 25/4
Tony Shalhoub - Tony plays Adrian Monk in Monk, the
looks-like-a-Sunday-teatime-drama-but-isn’t detective show.
Monk is an obsessive compulsive police officer that
manages to be brilliant at his job despite being scared of every single
thing on the entire planet. Shalhoub plays the role excellently; he
manages to be funny while avoiding the obvious "Look at me! I’m
disabled!" performance that Monk could have easily been given. Monk
isn’t a traditional sitcom at all, but Tony’s nomination is deserved.
Current odds - 19/5
Tomorrow, we’ll conclude our look at the Best Comedy Actor category.
