Today, Elton John gets married to his long-time partner David Furnish in Windsor on the first day that same-sex civil partnerships are made legal in England.
Elton John probably spent this morning doing the traditional male ‘getting married today’ routine. That usually involves waking up next to an anonymous stripper, experiencing huge waves of crashing guilt, deciding that you’re not ready for marriage, only to realise that you don’t have the guts to cancel the wedding at such short notice, and then confining yourself to a miserable life of depression and regret. Congratulations, Elton!
At 11am today, Sir Elton John (CDs) and David Furnish became one of the first
same-sex couples to engage in civil partnerships in England today.
Although same-sex couples have been able to get married in Scotland
since yesterday – and in Northern Ireland since Monday – today is the
first day that gay marriages have been allowed in England.
And – unusually for a man who thinks that ginger wigs are the height of fashion and who likes to grab attention at royal funerals by singing ditties at a piano – Elton John decided keep his wedding low-key. He told Attitude magazine last month that the wedding ceremony would be a tiny, private one with just Himself, David Furnish and their parents acting as witnesses:
"Out of respect for their (our parents) support, we want to just keep it small – not to make a ballyhoo of the ceremony."
Wow, that’s unusually tasteful for Elton ‘Ballyhoo’ John. It looks like he really respects the solemn importance of a civil, legally-recognised, lifetime partnership.
What’s that? There’ll be a $1 million reception at Elton and David’s mansion for 700 famous people later on? That’s more like it. And if it’s anything like the couple’s stag night on Monday – featuring topless waiters in black ties and riding boots serving guests with flutes of champagne and guests including Paul O’Grady Liz Hurley, the Osbournes, Cilla Black, Bryan Adams, Janet
Street-Porter, Donna Air, Trinny and Susannah and Gary Barlow
– it’ll be a doozy.
Now, the only problem is what to call David Furnish from now on. Elton’s a Knight, so now that they’re married, that makes David a… Lady?
