Before John Peel, radio playlists were a thing of unremitting horror, and the only music worth listening to, after the cornucopia of goodness in the 60s, was classical. The underground music scene is as good as it ever was, but there's not much cross-pollination with the mainstream.Elton is the icon of the mainstream times.
