As some of you may have noticed, hecklerspray has been following the Britney Spears charity eBay auction ever since it was announced last week.
What grabbed our attention – and the attention of an army of clammy-handed Britney obsessives – was the inclusion of a jewel encrusted bra that Britney jiggled around in on TV once. People were prepared to spend thousands of dollars on the bra – money that would go directly towards The Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund.
But over the weekend, Britney decided that she didn’t want to sell the bra because she doesn’t want anyone to feel "misled".
The Britney Spears (CDs) eBay auction made a lot of money for the
hurricane recovery charity – over 400 of her personal items were sold
off, including jeans, shoes and furniture. All in all, these items made
a lot of money for charity. But none of them were as hotly contested as
the jewel encrusted bra that Britney wore in promotions for a 2001 HBO
concert special.
It had already been removed by a member of eBay staff once,
concerned that the bra broke eBay’s rules for selling underwear. But
when it was placed on sale again, bids shot up to around $47,000. Then
Britney had a change of heart. She issued a statement on her website
saying:
"Dear fans,
Since the bidding for
my "Jewel encrusted bra" on the eBay charity auction has exceeded our
original expectations, I’m concerned that some of you may be confusing
the bra with something it’s not. As correctly stated in the eBay
description, this bra was worn by me during promotion for my HBO
special, however it is not the one I wore onstage during the Baby One
More Time performance. I feel the correct thing to do is remove this
item from the auction because I don’t want any of you to feel misled. I
want to thank everyone for your generous bids that have been made on
all of the on line items. 100 percent of the proceeds will go towards
hurricane relief efforts and I thank you so much for your support!Love,
Britney"
So
let’s get this right – Britney didn’t want to sell the bra because some
people can’t understand very clear product descriptions. And so the
hurricane recovery fund has to do with $47,000 less than they expected.
Anyway, we’d imagine that the bidders didn’t really care where
Britney wore the bra – the important thing was that Britney wore it at
all. We’re pretty sure that the winner wouldn’t want to do anything more than nuzzle his face in the bra for the rest of his life and cry happy wistful tears, anyway.
