Downright Dynamite Downloads Of The Week: Ween
It's Ween week here at hecklerspray. To celebrate the best band in the underground's majestic legacy, we're doling out a must-download list for all of you non-believers to marinate in.
This was a very hard list to create, not because Ween doesn't have that many good songs – no no no. The problem here is they've got a million different sounds. The Ween sound is so varied that hecklerspray used to only describe them as "talented Mexican pirates on helium singing about ponies and heartfelt children afraid to die". But you know, that still doesn't do them justice. Anyway, as every week hecklerspray's just hoping to introduce you, our favourite reader, to music you may not otherwise have heard. Favourite reader, this is Ween, Ween, this is favourite reader. We've got a feeling about you two.
Ween: Voodoo Lady off Chocolate And Cheese
(This is the track that's said to have started off our whole Ween craze. It's got witchcraft, religion, and crazy ladies shaking sticks. Some say it's a Biblical predecessor of end times. We say it's entirely possible.)
Ween: Ocean Man off The Mollusk
(This is one of our favourite Ween tracks. It's got a voice transmogrifier and and some pretty raucous guitar. Speaking of which – did we mention that Ween's guitarist (Dean Ween) has guested a couple times in Queens of the Stone Age recording sessions? Well it's true. Not only that, Queens opened for Ween way back before they were anybody. We saw them ourselves.)
Ween: You Were The Fool off 12 Golden Country Greats
(Ween's country album. It doesn't sound like current country – it sounds awesomely like country from the sixties. The album used to contain a Mohammed Ali splurb, where he was talking about how great he was. It ended in a law suit, and any album you find now won't have it on there. Unless you're real lucky. This is our favourite track off the country album. It's got beautiful lyrics about a couple of dance-happy fellas named Jim and Dan prancing round the pool. We dare you to not like it.)
Ween: Monique The Freak off Shinola (Vol. 1)
(One of the sounds Ween likes to dabble in is funk, and don't nothin' get funkier than this one. It was originally available on their internet-only album Craters Of The Sack – for free, but they just put it on their rarities album you see listed up there.)
Ween: Beacon Light off The X-Files: The Album
(David Duchovny is a fan of Ween. When his X-Files movie came out way back, he insisted Ween be on the soundtrack. They didn't let him down. Ween's made quite a few soundtrack appearances, and this is our favourite one.)
Ween: Transdermal Celebration off Quebec
(This is off Ween's most recent studio album – and our favourite one period. It's got a super cool video with their logo (The Boognish) sprouting legs and taking over an unsuspecting town. The trick is to appease the Boognish, then he'll leave you and yours alone.)
Ween: Pollo Asado off The Pod
(This one's spoken word. It's very very funny spoken word. Rather than explain it, we'll just tell you to check it out.)
Now listen to the beauty of Ween via the magic of Napster
