Downright Dynamite Downloads Of The Week: The Servant, Rogue Wave, Paul Simon…
hecklerspray is a missionary of sorts. We try our best to send the sweet embracing message of real rock n' roll around the world, hoping only to play our part in combating the evils of MTV, most radio stations, and their good friends the satanists. We hope only that you will aid us in our quest, and find these songs of your own volition, and play them for as many people as you can.
This week's band and track recommends include: The Servant, Wheatus, Wheat, Rogue Wave, Paul Simon, and Band Of Horses.
The Servant: Cells off The Servant
(These guys knocked us on our can last week. We'd never heard of them before, then BAM! – they're #1 on our 'most frequently played' list. The Servant actually did the theme song to that Sin City movie. Remember that? Yeah, it was black and white with splashes of colour. That's way outside the box.)
Wheatus: Lemonade off Lemonade – EP
(Immaturity can be a powerful driving force in the music world. The main message of this track is a boy who thought he'd grow old with his girlfriend, but instead she cheats on him with a guy who may have larger genitalia than our insecure protagonist. Plus, this track's got a xylophone, and xylophones – in Greek myth anyway – are the celestial product of Zeus coming down and humping a very attractive piano. Oh! Those Greeks had a silly explanation for everything!)
Wheat: More Than You'll Ever Know off Hope And Adams
(Yes, they are alphabetically smack-dab next to Wheatus on our iPod. That made it real convenient for this week's list inclusion. Wheat is a good folksy band, at least they usually are. This particular track is lifted off their first album, and is the most rocking any band can ever hope to be. If they ever made an entire album this powerful, the earth's very axis might full-on shift.)
Rogue Wave: Bird on a Wire off Descended Like Vultures
(Ah, Rogue Wave, the first band that ever made us pop a vessel. This is the second song we've recommended off this album, and we may just recommend all the rest. hecklerspray's actually gonna see them twice in June. We attribute it to good karma, due us from the time we single-handedly pulled a fat lady out from under our U-haul. The one we drove on top of her.)
Band of Horses: The Funeral off Everything All The Time
(Admittedly, we know very little about this band except they take funerals very seriously. That, and they're signed to Sub Pop, proving once again that it may be the best label in the world. This particular track is a slow burner, and we love it. We're seeing them soon, too.)
Paul Simon: How Can You Live In The Northeast off Surprise
(We know what you're thinking – who the devil is Paul Simon – right? Well let us tell you – he's a 17-year-old songsmith that has a talent few lyricists possess even after years in the biz. Wait a sec – it turns out everyone knows who he is, and he's been around a hundred times longer that hecklerspray. Our bad. But this 2006 release of his sounds that new. It may well be our favorite track from him ever.)
Now listen to these beautiful choices via the magic of Napster
