Johnny_cash_kathy_walk_the_lineThe forthcoming Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line has gathered a fair amount of pre-publicity, mainly because the star of the film Joaquin Phoenix seems to be having a total meltdown because of it.

There’s already all kinds of whispered Oscar talk about Walk The Line, but there is one person who isn’t a fan – Kathy Cash, a daughter of Johnny Cash. She was so appalled by Walk The Line that she stormed out of a family screening of the movie. Five times.

It’s already safe to say that the new Johnny Cash (CDs) biopic Walk The
Line
will garner a bunch of Oscar nominations, if not actual awards.
Why? Because Hollywood bloody loves it when people do impressions of dead
singers – just look at the performance of Ray. But Kathy Cash doesn’t seem to be a fan of
the new film.

Although Kathy says that Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon
deserve Oscars for their roles as Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, she
objects to the portrayal of her mother, Cash’s first wife Vivian
Liberto Distin
:

“My mom was basically a nonentity in the entire film except for the mad
little psycho who hated his career. That’s not true. She loved his
career and was proud of him until he started taking drugs and stopped
coming home.”

Kathy
Cash’s objections to Walk The Line are just the latest flashpoint in an
already quite strange publicity campaign, which has been mainly
revolving around the personality quirks of Joaquin Phoenix, who plays Johnny Cash.

First Joaquin learnt to play the guitar and
sing exactly as Johnny Cash did. Then he learnt how to drink like
Johnny Cash – an experiment that landed Phoenix a drying-out spell in rehab. There have been reports just this week that Phoenix had been storming out of
press interviews, and then at the LA premiere of Walk The Line, he asked a
reporter:

"Do I have a large frog in my hair? Something’s crawling
out of my scalp. I’m not worried about the looks. I’m worried about the
sensation of my brain being eaten… What did you ask me?"

Was storming out once not good enough for her? Did no-one notice her the first four times?

  • Marcie says:

Who cares about her? What about that man asking ’bout frogs in his hair?
    FREAKY!

  • Linda says:

I don’t blame Kathy Cash one bit for storming out of the screening of the movie Walk The Line.
After I saw this movie I came out losing alot of respect for June Carter and Johnny Cash, it was obvious that something was going on while he was still a married man! I don’t care what age we’re living in, committing adultry is still wrong. If June Carter was the religious woman she was portrayed to be, she would have stopped touring with him, and left him alone because he was married to another woman, who was obviously still having children on a regular basis with this man. I was very disappointed after seeing this film, and I can only hope there was alot of misinformation in this film.

Excuse me, I happen to know Kathy Cash and she has every right to the way she feels, not only as a person but as the daughter of Johnny and Vivian, damn cut her some slack. We have not walked the walk she has walked so until we do don’t make judgement.

  • Kristin says:

Honestly, I didn’t think that Vivian was portrayed badly in the movie. I think that it portrayed her as a realist. And I felt that she supported his career from the movie..Also I think that she acted like someone who was neglected and acted appropriately..The romance between John and June was just beyond her control..Anyone who has gone through something similar would understand..such as finding out that your husband loved another..I understand that Kathy was upset about the movie..but she needs to understand that not all people who watch the movie will think that her mother was a bad person who never supported John..obviously she did support him..he was her husband after all and she did remain married to him..she tried to make it work it seemed..she was just fighting a losing battle..I loved the movie by the way.

  • Chris Perver says:

I am a big fan of Johnny and June, but I did not like the film. I have read Man In Black, and the film barely mentioned Cash’s faith in God, or his experience in the cave which was a major turning point in his life. Joaquin looked a bit like Johnny Cash but that is where the similarity ended.
