Damon Albarn: ‘I’m Gonna Make Pete Doherty History’

GorillazDamon Albarn may make better records as a piece of animation than he’s ever made in real life, but that hasn’t stopped him slagging off Pete Doherty, a man whose very existence gets more cartoonish by the day.

It’s true; Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty (CDs) has been all over the shop lately.

He’s lost a bird most men would kill in cold blood for, made a prat out of himself at the world’s biggest-ever concert, and now even his own people are turning against him.

Fellow indie singer Damon Albarn (CDs) recently had this to say about Pete’s Live 8 debacle:

"The concert was all about raising awareness, but Peter looked like he was having trouble raising his own awareness. He looked wasted."

‘Peter’ Doherty has already apologised for his lacklustre performance at Sir Bob’s charity gig. He looked wasted and apparently he was.

Albarn has just as much right to judge Doherty as anyone else. When he’s not flooding the airwaves with yet another techno-inspired Gorillaz track, Damon likes to indulge in a good old gripe and grumble.

First the Live 8 line-up and now the acts themselves. Who’s next in his firing line, the audience?! Not yet.

"He’s a mess." concluded Albarn on poor Pete "I’m starting a campaign to Make Doherty History."

Pete Doherty is an A1 screw up, though quite why this should be bothering Damon Albarn we can’t put our finger on.

Here at hecklerspray we don’t want many friends (have to send them birthday cards, visit them in hospital, it sucks); but angry Albarn probably can’t afford to lose any.

Liam Gallagher still wants to kick his head in, after all. Don’t belive that ‘Loving Gorillaz’ crap for one second, Mancs never forget. Or wash.

Well, it just sounds like competition to me. Damon is an outstanding artist and British performer. His accolades are too long to list here. Damon would think I’m a b*tch for saying this (he’s already called me that once) but Pete Doherty is fantastic in his own right. I listen to Up the Bracket and it sounds all the world like Neoclassical Clash to me and its just brilliant. Pete is a troubled character and no one would say he has it “all together” but he is an amazing musician just the same. Pete’s music is full of heart. I love his lyrics and his voice. Everything he does musically is pretty fantastic. He’s so talented. But the vibe that Damon and Pete put out are so different. First off, Damon has it together enough that he can do philanthropic intercultural things and that is a noble and admirable endeavor. I think Pete would like to do things like that if he had the capacity but he’s got his hands full just holding together his life which is a bit of a “shambles.” (forgive the pun) But that aside, they are both amazing, aren’t they? Equally amazing, I think. Just in different, completely different ways.
