Today is probably the most pivotal day of the year in the race to become UK 2005 Christmas Number One – it’s the day that X Factor winner Shayne Ward releases That’s My Goal.

Until today, the Christmas Number One hunt had been mainly made up of a man pretending to be a baby singing a song about a digger and Westlife - a band who couldn’t be more dull if you painted them beige and ordered them to sing about carpets.

Has the release of That’s My Goal livened up the Christmas Number One race? There’s only one way to find out.

Here comes today’s batch of Christmas Number One betting odds, with help from SportingOdds.com

Shayne WardThat’s My Goal. OK, we’ll level with you – we
genuinely can’t see the appeal of Shayne Ward. He’s OK looking, and is
an above average singer, but we can’t see why people are actually
e-mailing us to see if we can pass on his telephone number so that they
can set him up with their Mum. Anyway, we still haven’t got the foggiest how That’s
My Goal
goes even though we heard it a million times on Saturday. That
won’t stop the kids from buying it, though, They all think Shayne is well
bum. Current Christmas Number One odds – 1/10

Nizlopi - The JCB Song. Nizlopi are still number one, and some
people are saying that they can hold on and take the Christmas Number
One spot on Sunday. We’re not so sure, though. It’s a man pretending to
be a boy saying "Ooh, my Dad looks quite tired," and mumbling about diggers and stuff. As a Christmas Number
One? As a Christmas Number One? The JCB Song would have to sell a lot of copies to stay at number one, but it has had a two day headstart over Shayne Ward. Current Christmas Number One odds – 7/2

Anyone Else – Who exactly, you’re asking, is Anyone Else? That is something you’ll only be able to find out by looking at the full SportingOdds Christmas Number One list. We’d tell you all the acts right here, but there’s 43 of them and we really can’t be arsed. So Anyone Else means anyone apart from the 43 acts on the Christmas Number One list. Clear? Current Christmas Number One odds – 8/1

We’ll update these odds tomorrow and on Friday, but in the meantime to see the whole list of contenders, or the
latest odds, or to place a huge bet on one of the performers, check out
the Specials section of SportingOdds.com. And bet!

  • Gordon says:

If you are prepared to write off the NIzlopi song due to it’s lyrics, you clearly have no concept of musical talent.

If you allow your musically inept mind to listen beyond the lyrics, you would be able to hear a very good song. I am rarely a fan of the singles topping the chart, but this is an exception.

Getting back to the lyrics. Apart from being original, they are also quite interesting. Often provoking fond memories for people of when they were younger, with an anti-bullying message incorporated.

Comparing this song to the other contender for xmas number one, in my mind there is no contest. That X-factor song is bland and uninteresting. If you were going to criticise lyrics, this song deserves it more.

Of course, people like you will always hear a song like nizlopi’s and consider it to be the caliber of a song like “Mr Blobby” purely because it has novelty lyrics. Get a grip.

  • Rob says:

Slagging off the Mr Blobby song shows you clearly know nothing about music. It has a catchy melody, lyrics which pentrate to the heart of the humnan condition and is performed by the ultimate front man – charismatic, good looking and with a stong and original voice.

  • Rhiannon says:

Shayne Ward is not just OK looking he is drop dead gorgeous!! If “That’s My Goal” doesn’t get to number one then it will be a tradgedy, it’s a great song and once you’ve sung “Over The Rainbow” just like he did on Saturday night then I’ll allow you to say he’s not a great singer.

  • sophie says:

oh my god i can’t believe that you are saying stuff about shayne he is great! give the poor guy a chance! he tried so hard to get this far and all you can say is that it is rubbish i agree completely with Rhiannon
