It’s time for a blast through another five contenders for the UK 2005 Christmas Number One Spot - a careful weighing up before we realise that, yes, the X Factor winner’s probably got it in the bag.

Christmas Number One Fact Of The Day: The first ever formally recognised Christmas Number One single was Here In My Heart by Al Martino, a song mostly about ventricles. Or something.

Today’s splattering of potential Christmas Number One betting odds come from James Blunt, Craig David, Peter Andre and Jordan, Paul McCartney and Rachel Stevens. Betting odds, as ever, come from SportingOdds.com

James Blunt - James Blunt might look like a whiny sap, but remember
he was in the army. He could destroy your house with a tank if he
wanted to. Doesn’t make him any less insufferable, though. James wants
to round off his breakthrough year with a Christmas Number One in the
form of Goodbye My Lover, a mournful sack of bobbins that’s probably
slow enough to be a Christmas Number One. Can it be done? We’d like to
think not, but we could be wrong. Current Christmas Number One odds -
20/1

Craig David - One of the very few things we know about Craig David
is that he doesn’t eat turkey for Christmas - he eats chicken. Chicken!
Is this the kind of man you want to give a Christmas Number One to? As
it turns out, there’s no need to fret. The only Craig David song
possibly in contention for the Christmas Number One spot is that one
that came out last month that sounded like a Gabrielle song. Craig
David’s next release is said to be Unbelievable Johnny, out in February.
Actually, it’s a double A-side of Unbelievable and Johnny, but calling
it Unbelievable Johnny is funnier. Anyway: Christmas Number One? No.
Current Christmas Number One odds - 66/1

Peter Andre And Jordan - Thank God this one isn’t true. Back during
Children In Need, Peter Andre and Jordan sang a duet of A Whole New
World
, from one Disney cartoon or another. Needless to say, it was more
terrible than your mind could possibly imagine. Which would put it in a
prime spot to become Christmas Number One. Luckily, there are no plans
for the song to be a single. Yet.No Jordan single? That’s the best
Christmas present of all! Current Christmas Number One odds - 66/1

Paul McCartney - Paul McCartney, of course, already has a stack of Christmas
Number One records. I Want To Hold Your Hand, I Feel Fine,
Daytripper/We Can Work It Out, Hello Goodbye
and Mull Of Kintyre were
all Christmas Number One songs. But that was when he had songs coming
out in the Christmas period - this year he doesn’t. And, more
relevantly, that was when he was good. No chance this year, Sir Paul.
Current Christmas Number One odds - 80/1

Rachel Stevens - Hahaha! Rachel Stevens? Christmas Number one?
Hahaha! No way! Even an imaginary duet between Jordan and Peter Andre
has more chance of being Christmas Number One than Rachel Stevens!
Absolute rank outsider. Current Christmas Number One odds - 200/1

We’re doing this until Christmas, you know. That’s plenty of time for you to check out the amazingly comprehensive
Christmas Number One betting market over at the Specials section of
SportingOdds.com. And get betting - it’s the only way to stop you
becoming completely sick of the bloody songs.
