When you want to sue a person, it’s not all cut and dry. To alert them to the lawsuit you’re intending to lambast them with, they must be informed in writing, and must physically accept the papers they are served. The hardest part is often finding the individual you intend to monetarily (or freedom-arily) deprive.
When they’re on Celebrity Big Brother, though, it can be easy. The target (in this case former television host Michael Barrymore) is confined to the innards and fenced-in out-ards of an immobile house. And if he’s physically exhausted from doing some sort of back yard Olympics when you get there, all the easier to slip those papers into his warm and sweaty hands. It’d be a court solicitors ideal, unless of course the Celebrity Big Brother executives refuse to accept the papers on Barrymore’s behalf, and absolutely will not grant any sort of access to him.
That sort of predicament is often referred to as a pickle.
In 2001 Stuart Lubbock’s body was found floating in Michael
Barrymore’s swimming pool. The tragic accident happened after a party
where Lubbock is said to have been left alone outside by the pool for
about ten minutes.
A man by the name of Tony Bennett (no, not that Tony Bennett) wants
criminal charges brought against Mr. Barrymore for his role in the
unfortunate death. That role allegedly included an assault on Lubbock
by rubbing cocaine into his gums.
Mr. Bennett along with Lubbock’s parents showed up on the Celebrity Big Brother lot with the intention of serving those papers, but they could
not get past security. After waiting some time, the party was allowed a
very brief meeting with one of the show’s executives. The meeting had
no effect, as the executive would not accept the papers on Barrymore’s
behalf.
Bennett tried leaving the docs on a security desk, but a guard
called out saying the papers had not been accepted, and they could not
be left there. Bennett said he’d later try sending the papers by
recorded post.
Such extreme legal proceedings on the Celebrity Big Brother show would no
doubt have been phenomenal for ratings, but the powers that be refused
the papers anyway. Barrymore, it seems you’re law suit-free for the
moment, and you can thank your current employer for that. Survivor,
Next Top Model or Wife Swap no doubt would have all sold you right
down the river.
