Busta Rhymes hasn't been enjoying the best of years so far – one of his bodyguards was fatally shot, he was sued by a man who he apparently beat up and now he's been arrested for assault. On top of that his new single sucks more ass than an industrial strength ass-hoover.
But let's stick to the matter at hand – the arrest of Busta Rhymes for assault and possession of a weapon. Busta Rhymes was arrested and charged with assault in New York on Saturday. Nobody is really sure what event sparked Busta Rhymes' arrest, or who he apparently assaulted, but – hey – a rapper is in trouble with the law. That's news, isn't it? Isn't it?
There was a time when Busta Rhymes was the effervescent clown prince of hip-hop, spitting out lightning fast verses and telling us that he had us all in check and what have you. Lately though, Busta Rhymes hasn't had such a good time of it – being drafted in to do rubbish guest-spots on Pussycat Dolls singles and making music videos which copy Mr & Mrs Smith so faithfully that they may as well just shown a bit of the DVD instead of bothering with – you know – actually filming anything.
On a more serious note, Busta Rhymes is being sued by an autograph hunter who claims that he was beaten up by Rhymes and his team of goons. And, on an even more serious note, one of Busta Rhymes' bodyguards was shot dead in February; and Busta Rhymes has subsequently annoyed the police for refusing to be interviewed about the incident.
And now on top of that Busta Rhymes has been arrested for assault apparently following an incident that took place last week where Busta Rhymes reportedly attacked a man who allegedly spat at his car. Other reports are suggesting that a machete was found in Busta Rhymes' car. The rapper was arraigned on the charge on Sunday morning along with two members of his crew, and were released after several hours.
However, this arrest has sparked cries that the police were simply looking for an excuse to get Busta Rhymes to talk about the shooting of his bodyguard, as a source told the New York Daily News:
"I don't know if this is normally something he would even be arrested for. But his bouncer was killed and he didn't want to cooperate. This is our way of dealing with it."
Maybe this ploy will work and Busta Rhymes will finally take the time to tell police his side of the shooting story, or perhaps he'll do as Beanie Sigel has done and keep quiet until he can release a song all about it. Although, with Busta Rhymes' current form, chances are he'll have to squeeze his version of events into a Rihanna guest-rap for a single with a video based around The Island. And he'll probably blame Flipmode quite a lot, whatever that means.
