Having details about your marriage splashed about in public is hurtful enough for anyone, but it's even more hurtful if – as is apparently happening with Bruce Springsteen – the details are all false.
Bruce Springsteen has been at the centre of recent stories that claim he had secretly separated from his wife in order to have a torrid affair with the widow of a man who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and now Bruce Springsteen is taking time out to refute these claims on his website, even though he says doesn't like to mix his personal life with his musical career. Guess that song about Bruce Springsteen bumming a whore in a hotel was just a work of fiction, then.
As far as being musically relevant goes, Bruce Springsteen is way past his best – throwing out 30th anniversary re-releases of albums from when you were good is hardly cutting edge, while any old fool could get banned from Starbucks if they tried hard enough – but at least Bruce Springsteen is still making an effort when it comes to good old fashioned scandal.
Last week the New York Post reported that the 15-year marriage between Bruce Springsteen and his wife Patti Scialfa was on the rocks due to an emerging relationship between Bruce and the widow of a man killed during the 9/11 attacks who Bruce met while organising the America: A Tribute To Heroes telethon. However, thanks to the magic of the internet, Bruce Springsteen has responded to these claims via his official website:
I hesitate to use this website for anything personal believing it should remain a place where fans of my music can come free of the distractions that occasionally arise with the rest of my job. However, due to the unfounded and ugly rumours that have appeared in the papers over the last few days, I felt they shouldn't pass without comment. Patti and I have been together for 18 years – the best 18 years of my life. We have built a beautiful family we love and want to protect and our commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married.
So there we go – Bruce Springsteen isn't having it away with a widow behind his wife's back. You may now return to ignoring 98% of the stuff that Bruce Springsteen does.
